Fransýz fizikçi Augustin Fresnel tarafýndan geliþtirilen fresnel lensin en önemli özelliði ýþýk kaynaðýndan deðiþik yönlerde gelen ýþýnlarý, tek bir doðrultuda geçirmesidir. Bu sayede ýþýðýn yönü kontrol altýna alýnmaktadýr. Ýlk zamanlar bu buluþ deniz fenerlerinde kullanýldý. Elektriðin olmadýðý dönemlerde düþük ýþýk þiddeti veren lambalar, fresnel mercekler sayesinde uzaklardan görülebilmekteydi.
