His research interests include safety assurance techniques, reliability and safety modeling, fault simulation, embedded system security, and design techniques for dependable systems. Biographical Sketch Barry Johnson received the B.S., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1979, 1980, and 1983, respectively. Dr. Johnson has served on the faculty since 1984. He has published more than 130 technical articles. He has received many national and international awards, including the Frederick Emmons Terman Award, the C. Holmes MacDonald Award, and the Alan Berman Research Publications Award. The University of Virginia awarded him the Alumni Board of Trustees and University of Virginia Endowment Fund Young Teacher Award. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia also awarded him its Outstanding Faculty Award. Dr. Johnson was named a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to fault-tolerant computing. He worked in the computer labs and at the Help Desk. Barry graduated in May 1989 with a BS in Computer Science with an emphasis in Artificial Intelligence. In May 1989 Barry went to work for Information Systems Development doing Cobol and IDMS programming. Barry is a keen horticulturist with interests not only in roses but also in camellias, and plants in general. He is an active member in his local garden club at Ivanhoe, and with the Australian Camellia Research Society. He is at present establishing his own landscaping business - 'Hearts Content'. For his general horticultural work, Barry was awarded the John Pascoe Fawkner Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria last year. But onto roses: Barry joined the Rose Society of Victoria in 1984 and was elected to Council in 1986 and has served as President since 1990. In addition he has served two terms as the President of the National Rose Society of Australia. He has brought to the State Office, energy, enthusiasm, and a vast knowledge across the whole spectrum of rose culture. He is in demand as a speaker in garden clubs and community organizations, and as a radio commentator especially on community radio Barry is a good photographer and uses his skill to good effect in the rose garden. He has been a regular contributor to gardening magazines and to the Australian Rose Annual. The Bicentennial Rose Garden in Ivanhoe was planned and planted by Barry under the aegis of the Ivanhoe Garden Club, and he basically maintains the garden with community assistance. It is also a site of one of the Rose Society's annual pruning demonstrations.

Barry Johnson 18th April 2001 Fellow Survivors, May 6th (2001) I will of been diagnosed with this disease 7 yrs. At the time I was 49 yrs old so you can imagine the effect it had on my life. I was just gettin' started when I all of a sudden I had a high dollar URO in La Jolla by the name of Lester Kline tell me I had less than 2 yrs to live and the only answer was surgery. So thats how I lived for the first 2 or 3 yrs. Living to die. I still do even now in many ways, like for instance I hesitate to get my teeth worked on because I think what a waste of money when I may eventually die from Pca. I have denied alot of things but looking back having Pca is no picnic. Sometimes I sit on the couch and feel like I literally can't lift a finger and other times I wake up from hotflashes and morning headaches. At times I have been so sick of them I've actually wondered what it would be like to go out back in the woods and blow my brains out with my 12 gauge.

Barry will replace long standing General Secretary, John Hennessy, who recently announced his retirement. Barry has served as the Assistant General Secretary (Schools) since 1991 and served as a Country Organiser from 1982-1990. As Assistant General Secretary (Schools), Barry has been responsible for co-ordinating many major Federation events including the Public Education Convention, Public Education Day and many Sky Channel meetings. Barry began his teaching career at Bingara Central School as a primary school teacher. He taught secondary English and History at Belmont High School and Francis Greenway High School from 1973 -1982. An election was also held for the position of NSW Teachers Federation Welfare Officer. Rod Brown was elected to fill the position. Rod has previously served as a Federation Welfare Officer and has recently worked in the area of superannuation for teachers.
