format this article to print JOHNSON, WILLIAM WHIPPLE (1843-1914). William Whipple Johnson, West Texas entrepreneur, one of seven children of Ethan S. and Jane B. Johnson, was born in Ionia, Michigan, on October 11, 1843. He attended school in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and became active in business in Ionia shortly after 1860; he described himself as a hotel keeper in 1867. He formed a partnership with his father and his younger brother Harvey to provide general merchandise for the people of Ionia. The three were devastated economically in the general collapse of the national economy in 1873. Johnson moved his base of operations to Corsicana, Texas, in the late 1870s, probably in search of a refuge from his debts. At this time he also entered a short-lived first marriage. His second and lasting marriage was to Anna Fatzinger Campbell, a childhood friend who also had had an unsuccessful first marriage. Both the daughter and the son born of this second marriage died in childhood. By midsummer 1880 William and Harvey Johnson lived in Strawn. There Harvey became postmaster on September 13, 1880, and William became assistant postmaster on January 4, 1881. In Strawn the brothers became involved in horse and cattle ranching, the procuring and selling of cedar posts, retail merchandising, and land acquisition. In 1887 they established the Johnson Coal Mining Company south of Strawn. The purchaser of the extracted coal was to be the Texas and Pacific Railway, and the railroad agreed to build a spur line to the mine. The Johnson brothers jointly participated in the formation of a second company, the Palo Pinto Coal Mining Company, in November 1887. On January 30, 1888, Harvey died, but not before he sold his entire estate to his brother for one dollar.

William Johnson, circa 1751 Sir William Johnson - Indian Superintendent The Role of Sir William Johnson In the Colonial Development of America and His Involvement in the Expansionist Policies of the British Imperial Government. by Paul Redmond Drew A S THE TITLE STATES, this essay will look closely at Johnson's role in the colonial development of America, and particularly the key concern over westward expansion. This became fundamentally linked with the differing views the British government and the colonial authorities held, over how this expansion should be managed, and in particular the financial cost of such a policy. This led, inexorably it seems, to the wider issues that then escalated into the Revolution and the fight for independence. Although Johnson died before the Revolution actually started, he was a key participant in the events that led up to this break with Britain, and as such the motives and actions of this man can give a picture of how the colonies and Britain viewed the future of America. T A A S WELL AS THIS POLITICAL ROLE Johnson had acquired a military one also. In 1746 he was made 'Colonel of the Forces to be raised out of the Six Nations'. The war with France that had begun in 1743, was concerned with the question of supremacy in North America, and as such naturally involved two of the subjects Johnson was most familiar with. Trade and the situation of the Indians in the area around the Great Lakes, were fundamental to the dispute. The role of the Indian tribes was therefore a vital one in any conflict between the two antagonists. The long standing feud between them meant that the support of the Indians was a key element; for this reason a brief description of the composition of the tribes and how they were disposed to the British would be in order.

Scientific Disciplines Primary: Iatrochemistry, Pharmacology Johnson was considered an iatrochemist, though he was at odds with other English iatrochemists. He published Three Exact Pieces of Leonard Piorovant, 1652, and in that same year Lexicon chemicum, drawn from Ruland, Basil Valentine, and Van Helmont. Though an iatrochemist, as an employee of the College of Physicians he wrote a defense of Galenic pharmacology (Some Brief Animadversions, 1665) against the attack of George Thomson. 7. William Johnson Over forty years a citizen of Fresno County, is a record of which but few of the present residents of this great commonwealth can boast, but such is the fact revealed by the biographical sketch of the honored pioneer and vineyardist, William Johnson, who for the past twelve years has resided on his highly improved ranch situated on the lower Reedley road, in the Parlier district. William Johnson was educated in the public schools of Sweden and reared on his father's farm until he was nineteen years of age, when he decided to become a sailor and to see more of the world. His first experience in following the sea was on a Norwegian liner sailing between Bremerhaven and Quebec. He followed the life of a sailor for six years and during this time visited many of the world's leading seaports, in France, England, Germany, Norway, Sweden, South America, China, Cuba, America, the Mediterranean seaports in Africa, and twice made the trip through the Suez Canal. During the last two years of his seafaring life he sailed on American ships and it was on one of these vessels that he arrived on the Pacific coast in 1874, and during that year he stayed awhile in San Francisco, the next year locating in Fresno County, where he found employment working on farms, which he followed for two years. In 1878 he bought 640 acres of land seven miles east of Fresno, where he commenced farming operations for himself and began to raise grain, but the undertaking failed to prove a financial success.

Johnson, a sergeant in Co. E, Seventh Connecticut Volunteers, originated from various locations in coastal South Carolina and Georgia and were sent home to his wife, Hannah J. Johnson. South Carolina places represented include Daufuskie Island, Beaufort, Hilton Head Island, James Island, and Morris Island. Over the course of two years of war, Johnson remained optimistic about the final outcome of the conflict. Writing from Daufuskie Island on 26 January [18]62, he predicted a speedy end to hostilities—"There doesn't seem to be any doubt as to the result of the pending engagement—and if we are successful it is the opinion of a good many that the war can't last long....It is my opinion if we do not lick the Rebels in 6 months more the difficulty will be settled either by ourselves or the interventions of foreign powers. In either case we should probably return home—if the former—in peace, and if the latter, for home protection." In addition to talk of war, Johnson's letters discuss the health of the troops, convey business advice, and express his love for daughters Mary and Lillian. While in the army, he earned extra money by speculating on watches, chewing tobacco, cigars, and other goods forwarded to him by family and friends at the North. Writing from Ft. Pulaski on 19 May [18]62, he suggested—"I could sell three thousand Cigars and three or four Gross of Chewing Tobacco in two days for cash and make from 40 to 50 dollars on it....I am glad that the watches are a coming as I think I can dispose of them to good advantage."

FRtR Biographies William Samuel Johnson A Biography of William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819) Quote William Samuel Johnson was the son of Samuel Johnson, the first president of King's College (later Columbia College and University). William was born at Stratford, CT, in 1727. His father, who was a well-known Anglican clergyman-philosopher, prepared him for college and he graduated from Yale in 1744. About 3 years later he won a master of arts degree from the same institution and an honorary master's from Harvard. Resisting his father's wish that he become a minister, Johnson embraced law insteadlargely by educating himself and without benefit of formal training. After admittance to the bar, he launched a practice in Stratford, representing clients from nearby New York State as well as Connecticut, and before long he established business connections with various mercantile houses in New York City. In 1749, adding to his already substantial wealth, he married Anne Beach, daughter of a local businessman. The couple was to have five daughters and six sons, but many of them died at an early age. Johnson did not shirk the civic responsibilities of one of his station. In the 1750s he began his public career as a Connecticut militia officer. In 1761 and 1765 he served in the lower house of the colonial assembly. In 1766 and 1771 he was elected to the upper house. The separatist leaders are now in disarray. Last week's election results in Quebec were the culmination of a bad year for separatism. And yesterday, a personal blow landed on Lucien Bouchard: The editor of the closest thing to a separatist house organ, Michel Venne of Le Devoir, questioned the Premier's commitment to the sacred cause. "If Mr. Bouchard no longer believes in sovereignty, let him say so. . . . Let others take up the cause. As long as he does not commit his government to a process [preparing for sovereignty], no one will believe any more in his incantations. His calls to mobilize will remain a dead letter. And his speeches will only bore us." The RIQ claims not to oppose the PQ, but to help by whipping up public support for secession. But it proposes dropping the PQ's commitment to offering a partnership with Canada in the aftermath of secession. This choice of full independence embarrasses the PQ, whose leaders notably Mr. Bouchard believe that only sovereignty accompanied by a partnership offer can ever be saleable. True believers are convinced that secession can be won by talking it up constantly, by harnessing the government's powers to its promotion, and by funding committed non-governmental groups. But that assumption is naive, and an attempt to implement it could backfire.
