The Hilbert problems 1900-2000
Jeremy Gray In 1900 David Hilbert went to the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris to give an invited paper. He spoke on The Problems of Mathematics , to such effect that Hermann Weyl later referred to anyone who solved one of the 23 problems that Hilbert presented as entering the honours class of mathematicians. Throughout the 20th century the solution of a problem was the occasion for praise and celebration.
David Hilbert around 1900 Hilbert in 1900
By 1900 Hilbert had emerged as the leading mathematician in Germany. He was famous for his solution of the major problems of invariant theory, and for his great Zahlbericht , or Report on the theory of numbers , published in 1896. In 1899, at Klein's request, Hilbert published The foundations of geometry You have opened up an immeasurable field of mathematical investigation which can be called the "mathematics of axioms" and which goes far beyond the domain of geometry.
Hermann Minkowski
Hilbert was therefore poised to lead the international community of mathematicians. He consulted with his friends Minkowski and Hurwitz, and Minkowski advised him to seize the moment, writing:

Minkowski, Rudolf (1895 - 1976)
Rudolf Leo Bernhard Minkowski was born in Strasbourg on May, 28th 1895 and died in Berkeley, California, on January 4th 1976. He was the son of Oskar Minkowski, a professor for pathology. Rudolf married Luise Amalie David (1902 - 1978) in Leipzig, Germany, in 1926. They had one daughter and one son, Eva and Hermann. After his retirement from the Mt. Wilson and Mt. Palomar observatories he received an invitation from the Radio Astronomical Laboratory in Berkeley. There he worked from 1961 to 1965, then retiring the second time. Minkowski was member of the Royal Astronomical Society, the US National Academy of Sciences; he received the Bruce Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1961 and a Dr. h.c. at Berkeley in 1968.

Minkowski Diagram Physicists commonly use a Minkowski Diagram to look for patterns in relativistic data. They plot the lifetime vs. the decay length for each particle. The lifetime is defined as the separation in time as measured by the detector between the creation of a particle and its decay. The decay length is the separation in space between the creation of a particle and its decay. Each particle has four values which define its existence: location of creation = S c location of decay = S d time of creation = T c time of decay = T d These four values describe the creation of the particle by the ordered pair S c , T c ) and its decay by S d , T d The Minkowski Diagram is a plot of the differences in these ordered pairs. The points on the plot are:
S d S c T d T c
