JOHN NAPIER,
INVENTOR OF LOGARITHMS:
HIS CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN
Because so many people claim descent from John of Logarithms, sometimes, unfortunately, wrongly, the children and grandchildren of John of Logarithms are given on a this separate page.. The main reason for this is to try to rectify the misunderstanding arising from the unfortunate statement in the publication "The Napier Family" by Ivor Napier, published privately in the USA in 1963, that John’s son Robert had a son called Patrick who went to the Virginia. As you will see, Robert did not have a son called Patrick. The Patrick who was in Virginia in the 1650s was descended from the Napiers of Kilmahew John Napier, eighth Laird of Merchiston

    John Napier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. John Napier April 4 ) was a Scottish mathematician . He is most remembered as the inventor of logarithms and of the decimal point . He was born in Merchiston Tower, Edinburgh Napier is relatively little known outside mathematical circles where he made what is undoubtedly an extremely important advance in the history of mathematics. Logarithms made calculations by hand much easier and thereby opened the way to many later scientific advances. His work, Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio, contained thirty-seven pages of explanatory matter and ninety pages of tables, which facilitated the furtherment of astronomy dynamics and physics Napier's powers of invention were not confined to logarithms. He published a small treatise on a simple way to perform multiplication, the

I need practical examples of what man can do today because of his discovery. I am looking for applications of his discovery not only to math-minded types but to the average person. I teach seventh grade math in and would appreciate your help. I've already researched Napier and your previous answers to related questions. I just found your website and think it's very helpful. Thanks for maintaining it and answering so many questions. http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ Associated Topics

Napier's Bones and the Genaille-Lucas Rulers
    Introduction
In 1617, John Napier published Rabdologia , a book that contained a description of the rods that he had developed to aid in multiplication, division, and the extraction of square roots. Napier's bones have since become popular as a way of demonstrating multiplication to school students. One problem with Napier's rules is that the user is required to perform a number of additions and must keep track of the "carries" that occur during these additions. In the late 1800's, a frenchman named Henri Genaille invented an improved version of Napier's bones in response to a problem posed by Edouard Lucas. The Genaille-Lucas rulers allow for multiplication and division without the carries required by Napier's Bones. This web page presents Napier's Bones and the Genaille Lucas ruler in ready to print form. To use these documents, print them out on paper or transparency stock, use a paper cutter to separate the strips, and then have fun using them!
