Alfred Korzybski M ikolaj Kopernik Latin Nicolaus Copernicus, was the son of a Torun burgher. Copernicus completed mathematical and astronomical studies at Krakow University (also known as the Jagiellonian University) and then studied the liberal arts at Bologna, medicine at Padua, and law at the University of Ferrara, from which he emerged with a doctorate in canon law. Using the instruments he constructed (the originals are in the Uppsala museum in Sweden, taken by the Swedes during the Deluge), Copernicus discovered and proved the heliocentric system, upsetting the medieval notion that the earth was the center of the universe. His theory, "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium," was published in Nuremberg, May 24, 1543, while Copernicus was on his deathbed. He was reluctant to have it published earlier because it was in conflict with the official teachings of the Catholic Church, which had adopted the Ptolemaic system because it was compatible with the literal interpretations of the Bible. The Copernican view was later corroborated and improved by the great German astronomer, Johannes Kepler (1771-1630) who, relying on the empirical measurements of the Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) made the orbits of the planets elliptical rather than circular.

The origins of the “coup d’etat” of 1926 can be found in the first days of peace following the Polish Soviet War. The War Councils By decree on January 7th 1921 Pilsudski established The Full War Council (Pelna Rada Wojenna) as an advisory body to be Chaired by the President of the Republic. The Inner War Council (Scisla Rada Wojenna) would be led by a General who in case of war would become Supreme Commander. This inner Council was in charge of military plans and preparations and of the defence of the country. Freedom from political interference The aim was to keep military decisions free of political interference and of the changing political compositions of governments and so decisions of The Inner War Council were to be binding on Ministers of War! This was perhaps understandable in the aftermath of the near defeat of the Polish-Soviet War but it would become increasingly insufferable to post-war governments. Cause of dissent The attempts of Governments to assert their control over the army and Pilsudski’s determination to rebuff them would be at the very heart of his growing disillusionment with parliamentary government.
