Saved from ruin
By TIM WARNER
Country house visiting remains one of our most popular weekend pastimes and in the Dukeries area of north Nottinghamshire we are blessed with some very fine examples.
Although Welbeck Abbey (an army college) and Thoresby Hall (currently being converted to an hotel) are sadly not open to the public, Newstead - the ancestral home of Lord Byron - and Rufford Abbey near Ollerton, home of the Savile family, more than make up for their absence. Today these two great houses have become an essential part of Nottinghamshire's tourist industry, yet as recently as the Forties it looked as if one of them - Rufford - would be lost for ever. During the second world war, Rufford was occupied by military, who it was claimed, caused considerable damage to the fabric of the building. The then owner, Mr Henry Talbot de Vere Clifton, proposed redeveloping the land for housing and wanted to demoish Rufford altogether. Great concern was expressed locally and early in 1949, after much debate and discussion, an interim order of preservation was obtained by the county council. Plans for demolition were still going forward when finally, in August 1949 - 50 years ago this month - the preservation order was officially confirmed and the building placed under the care of the Ancient Monuments branch of the Ministry of Works (now English Heritage).

Calverly My Calverly ancestors The following material comes from the book " Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith". 01. John Le Scot probably came to England with the Empress Mawde (so called because she married 1st Henry, Emperor of Germany. She married 2nd Geoffrey Plantagenent). He married Larderina , 2nd daughter and co-heir of Alphonsus Gospatrick, Lord of Calverly, Pudsey and several manors. 02. John Le Scot , of Calverly, son of John. He w as Seneschal to Empress Maud, daughter of Henry I, by Maud, daughter of Malcolm, King of Scotland, and Margaret, Princess of the Saxon line. He bore for arms sometimes a lion rampant counterchanged and sometimes a lion rampant droit, as may be seen by his seal affixed to deeds in his time. He was living in reign of Stephen, 1136. He married a daughter of Sir John Luttrell, Knight of Hoton Paynel, Yorkshire. 03. Walter Le Scot , of Calverly, son of John. In 1176, gave the Vicarage of Calverly to the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin at York. He married Joan Swillington daughter of Sir John Swillington, 22nd of Henry II.

91. APIANUS, Petrus And JABIR Ibn AFLAH, Instrumentum Primi Mobilis, A Petro Apiano
Jabir was still quoted in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for instance, by sir henry savile and Pedro Nuñez. Copernicus
http://www.polybiblio.com/watbooks/2416.html
'... Jabir was better known in the West through Gerard of Cremona's translation. His name was used as that of an authority who criticized Ptolemy. But more serious was his influence on Western trigonometry... His most important influence was upon Regiomontanus' De triangulis, written in the early 1460s and printed in 1533, which systematized trigonometry for the Latin West. The core of the fourth book of this treatise is taken from Jabir without acknowledgement: the plagiarism was the subject of several pungent remarks by Cardano. Jabir was still quoted in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - for instance, by Sir Henry Savile and Pedro Nuñez. Copernicus' spherical trigonometry is of the same general type, but we have no reason to believe it was taken straight from the Islah. He called Jabir an "egregious calumniator of Ptolemy"' (DSB).
This work was translated by Gerard of Cremona, from the revised text, ca 1185, of Maimonides and his pupil Joseph ibn 'Aqnin.

The Life and Work of St. John Chrysostom. By Philip Schaff. Chapter I.-Literature. I. Editions of Chrysostom's Works S. Joannis Chrysostomi, archiepiscopi Constantinopolitani, Opera omnia quae exstant vet quae ejus nomine circumferuntur, ad mss. codices Gallicos, Vaticanos, Anglicos, Germanicosque castigata, etc. Opera et studio D. Bernardi de Montfaucon, monachi ordinis S. Benedicti e congregatione S. Mauri, opem ferentibus aliis ex eodem sodalitio, monachis . Greek and Latin, Paris, 1718-'38, in 13 vole., fol. This is the best edition, and the result of about twenty years of the patient labor of Montfaucon (d. Dec. 21, 1741, 86 years old), and several assistants of the brotherhood of St. Maur. More than three hundred mss. were made use of, but the eight principal mss., as Field has shown, were not very carefully collated. Montfaucon, who at the date of the completion of his edition was 83 years old, prepared valuable prefaces to every treatise and set of homilies, arranged the works in chronological order, and added in vol. XIII. learned dissertations on the life, doctrine, discipline and heresies of the age of Chrysostom. The Benedictine edition was reprinted at Venice, 1734-'41, in 13 vols. for.; at Paris, ed. by F. De Sinner (Gaume), 1834-'39, in 13 vols. (an elegant edition, with some additions); and, with various improvements and corrections, by J. P. Migne, Petit-Montrouge, 1859-'63, in 13 vols. The last is the most complete edition, but inferior in paper and type to that of Gaume. Migne uses the critical text of Field in Matthew and the Pauline Epp. He had previously edited a Latin Version, 1842, in 9 vols.
