Laurent Schwartz Born: 5 March 1915 in Paris, France Died: 4 July 2002 Click the picture above to see four larger pictures Show birthplace location Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Main index Laurent Schwartz Schwartz spent the year 1944-45 lecturing at the Faculty of Science at Grenoble before moving to Nancy where he became a professor at the Faculty of Science. It was during this period of his career that he produced his famous work on the theory of distributions described below. In 1953 Schwartz returned to Paris where he became professor, holding this position until 1959. He taught at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris from 1959 to 1980. He then spent three years at the University of Paris VII before he retired in 1983. The outstanding contribution to mathematics which Schwartz made in the late 1940s was his work in the theory of distributions. The first publication in which he presented these ideas was which appeared in 1948. The theory of distribution is a considerable broadening of the differential and integral calculus. Heaviside and Dirac had generalised the calculus with specific applications in mind. These, and other similar methods of formal calculation, were not, however, built on an abstract and rigorous mathematical foundation. Schwartz's development of the theory of distributions put methods of this type onto a sound basis, and greatly extended their range of application, providing powerful tools for applications in numerous areas.

But he was also a political activist who fought endlessly, not for any political party, but against injustice. Finally, he was well known as a collector of butterflies (he was said to possess some 20,000). With the armistice of 1940, Schwartz found himself writing his mathematics thesis in Clermont-Ferrand, where the Germans regarded the university as their particular enemy (it had taken refuge there when Strasbourg was annexed to Germany). It is remarkable that this thesis on real and imaginary exponentials was written in these conditions, which were even worse for someone who was Jewish. But the thesis was finished and accepted in 1943 and Schwartz was given his first university post at Nancy. There, he became one of the 20th century's greatest exponents of mathematical analysis by evolving his theory of "distributions" - or "generalised functions" as they are called in English - that won him, just before his 35th birthday, the American Fields Medal, his discipline's equivalent of the Nobel Prize. He was the first Frenchman to win this award. His two-volume Theory of Distributions, published in French in 1950-51, became a landmark.

L’hebdomadaire de Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber avait publié le 30 août 1957 une enquête de Jean Daniel intitulée « Du pain sur la planche de la Commission de Sauvegarde », qui, sur la base de ce que lui avait dit Josette Audin, avait exprimé les doutes les plus sérieux sur « l’évasion » de Maurice Audin, assistant à la faculté des sciences d’Alger, élève de Laurent Schwartz, membre du Parti communiste algérien, disparu en juin 1957. Prévenu en juillet alors qu’il se trouvait en Inde, Laurent Schwartz avait, on le sut plus tard, multiplié les télégrammes. Audin était alors déjà mort, assassiné comme tant d’autres par un officier parachutiste.
