See ISIS; A. Bouché-Leclercq, Histoire des Lagides, i. (1903), ch. iv.; J. G. Mjlne, History of Egypi under Roman Rule (1898), p. 140; G. Lafaye, Histoire du culte des divinités d’Alexandrie hors de l’Egypte (Paris, 1884). (F. LL. G.) Serena was founded by Juan Bohon in 1544, on the opposite side of the river, and was named after Pedro Valdivia’s birthplace in Estremadura, Spain. It was destroyed by the Indians soon after, and was rebuilt on its present site in 1549 by Francisco de Aguirre. The typical scheme of a large serenade or divertitnento differs from that of a symphony only in having six movements instead of four, the additions being another slow movement and minuet or scherzo. Beethoven’s septet and Schubert’s octet are on this plan, and are just as much serenades as Mozart’s Haffner” serenade, which is (not counting introductions) in eight movements with a kind of violin concerto in the middle. The six-movement scheme (though without the serenade style) was adopted by Beethoven in one of the profoundest and most serious works in all music, the string quartet in B flat, Op. 130. Brahms’s first essays in symphonic form took the shape of two orchestral serenades, of which the first was originally sketched for a large -group of solo instruments. If it had finally taken that form Brahms would have called it a divertirnento.

Very little is known of Serenus 's life. In fact the article [4] claims that Serenus was born in Antissa but this has been shown by more recent historians of mathematics to be based on an error. That he was born in Antinoupolis is confirmed from two sources. The information has been added to one of the manuscripts of his works by at a later stage but we have no reason to doubt the authority of the addition. It can also be deduced from a copy of the second treatise of Serenus which has survived. Serenus was a commentator on the texts of others but, unlike some commentators, he was a fine mathematician in his own right. He wrote two original mathematical works which show that he was indeed a mathematician of considerable ability. The two treatises by Serenus are On the Section of a Cylinder and On the Section of a Cone both of which have survived. In the preface to the first of these Serenus gives his reasons for writing the work [2]:- ... many persons who were students of geometry were under the erroneous impression that the oblique section of a cylinder was different from the oblique section of a cone known as an ellipse , whereas it is of course the same curve.

http://www.serenuspress.com/whoweare.html
About Us The National Center for the Study of History was founded in 1984 as a nonprofit educational institution under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Center promotes the study of history and encourages its application in nonacademic settings. To this end, the NCSH publishes educational material, advises teachers and students, and otherwise supports projects with compatible concern. Recognizing that sound history depends upon knowledge of other core subjects such as English, math, science, and geography, The Serenus Press was incorporated in 1986. Serenus is able to produce material that is broader in scope and financially beyond the means of the nonprofit Center. Both organizations are dedicated to showing students, teachers, and professionals the utility of scholarship. Promotion of Scholarship Publications Audience Over 330,000 of Serenus and the Center’s publications are in use at more than 1,500 universities, high schools, middle schools, and libraries in every state of the Union and in Canada. In addition to guiding students in their career choices, they encourage high school seniors’ enrollment in the liberal arts, stimulate interest in undergraduate liberal arts and history courses, and aid faculty career advisors. Funding All activities of the Serenus Press and the National Center for the Study of History are privately funded. We have no employees. All management and administrative services are contributed.

    Profile
    Abandoned his home and people to live as a hermit in Sirmiun, Pannonia (modern Hungary ) where he directed his thought to prayer, his labor to working a garden of fruit and herbs.
    One day he found a woman and her daughters walking in the garden around noon. He recommended they withdraw, and return in the cool of the evening, but the way he said it led her to believe he was simply chasing them out. Her husband was an imperial guard, and he convinced Emperor Maximian to revenge this imagined insult. Serenus was arrested and brought to trial, but simply repeated what he had said, and was immediately acquitted. However, his demeanor led the judge to suspect Serenus was a Christian, which was illegal. When questioned about it, Serenus admitted his faith. He was ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods; he refused, and was sentenced to death
    His story was very popular in times past due to his being a simple man brought to ruin not through any fault of his own, but as a result of the arrogance of the ruling class, a theme which has resonated in many an age, and because many writers and preachers liked to use the metaphor of the garden as an example of a proper Christian life.

    document.write (document.title);
    The second text I would like to discuss comes from Seneca's De tranquillitate animi ["On the Tranquillity of Mind"]. The De tranquillitate animi is one of a number of texts written about a theme we have already encountered, viz., the constancy or steadiness of mind. To put it very briefly, the latin word "tranquillitas" denotes stability of soul or mind. It is a state where the mind is independent of any kind of external event, and is free as well from any internal excitation or agitation that could induce an involuntary movement of mind. Thus it denotes stability, self-sovereignty, and independence. But "tranquillitas" also refers to a certain feeling of pleasurable calm which has its source, its principle, in this self-sovereignty or self-possession of the self.
    Serenus examines what he is or what he has accomplished at the moment when he requests this consultation:
    SERENUS: When I made examination of myself, it became evident, Seneca, that some of my vices are uncovered and displayed so openly that I can put my hand upon them, some are more hidden and lurk in a corner, some are not always present but recur at intervals; and I should say that the last are by far the most troublesome, being like roving enemies that spring upon one when the opportunity offers, and allow one neither to be ready as in war, nor to be off guard as in peace.
