Bartel Leendert van der Waerden (1903-1996) mathematician, historian Van der Waerden wrote a book that revolutionized twentieth-century algebra. The book, Moderne Algebra , was in part based on lectures by Emil Artin and Emmy Noether. In 1924, the 22-year-old Dutchman, having finished the university course at Amsterdam, arrived in Göttingen. There, wrote the Russian mathematician P. S. Alexandroff, van der Waerden readily mastered the theories of Emmy Noether, enhanced them with findings of his own, and like no one else, promulgated her ideas. Van der Waerden subsequently became one of the leading mathematicians of his century and wrote several important works in the history of mathematics, science, and astronomy. Van der Waerden fut aussi un historien des sciences. In 1928 he received his habilitation The year 1928 was a busy one for van der Waerden. He received a position at the University of Rostock but was appointed to a lectureship at Groningen in the same year. In 1931 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig where he became a colleague of Heisenberg Before and after World War II van der Waerden had problems as a foreigner from the Nazis. Although working in Germany he refused to give up his Dutch citizenship and his life was made difficult. After the War van der Waerden worked for Shell in Amsterdam in applied mathematics. In 1947 he visited the USA going to Johns Hopkins University. He returned in 1948 to a chair of mathematics at Amsterdam where he remained until 1951. In 1950 Karl Fueter died and van der Waerden was appointed to fill the vacant chair in Zurich in 1951.
