Er is echter niemand meer die een bedreiging kan vormen voor Patrick Verhulst. Uitslag: Eerste Patrick Verhulst, tweede Eric Servranckx, derde Jozef Goemans Patrick Verhulst pakt direct de leiding in de finale voor Jozef Goemans en Pierre Verscheure. Kris Tielemans en Christiaan Smidt zijn vanuit het achterveld bezig aan een opmars naar voren. Bij het ingaan van de laatste ronde is de volgorde Verhulst, Tielemans, Smidt, Goemans. Although this troubling disease certainly seems like something out of the ordinary, the mathematics predicts that wild swings in populations are possible even in the most normal of times. The mathematics involved is amazingly simple. The founder of population mathematics was Pierre Verhulst (1804-1849), a very talented Belgian mathematician dogged by poor health throughout his short life. Prior to his work, the famous British economist Robert Malthus had predicted that animal and human populations were fated to grow exponentially. But Verhulst understood that real populations are capped: in every habitat and for every species there is a carrying capacity . A population exceeding this capacity must go down rather than up. Verhulst reasoned something like this. Let's write p(n) for the population in year n and let M be the carrying capacity. The population grows at a rate g, a certain percentage per year, as animals are born or wander into the area. (For big, long-lived species like humans g will be small, like 5%, but for most small, short-lived animals it will be much larger, usually more than 100%.) Pierre Verhulst was born in Brussels, Belgium on Oct. 28, 1804. He attended the University of Ghent where he earned a doctoral degree in 1825 within three years. He eventually came back to Brussels and worked on number theory. He also gained an interest in social statictics from Adolphe Quetelet, another famous mathematician from Belgium who studied the theory of probability under Pierre Laplace and Joseph Fourier. As his interest grew, Verhulst spent more time with social statistics and less time trying to publish the complete works of Euler. In 1829 Verhulst translated John Herschel's Theory of light and published the paper. In 1835, Verhulst was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Brussels where he offered courses on geometry, trigonometry, celestial mechanics, astronomy, differential and integral calculus, and the theory of probability. In 1841, Verhulst was elected to the Belgium Academy. By 1848, he became the Academy's president. Verhulst's research on the law of population growth showed that forces, which tend to obstruct population growth, increase in proportion to the ratio of the excess population to the overall population. He proposed a population growth model which takes into account the possible limitation of population size due to limited resources. Verhulst's model is often called the "Logistic Growth Equation", or "Verhulst Equation". His model is considered an improvement over the Malthusian model, which assumes human population grows exponentially when plagues or other disasters do not occur.

Histoire Monsieur PIERRE DECOCK Né à Hondschoote le 9 Novembre 1834, il mourut à l'age de 52 ans le 12 Septembre 1887 à BRAY-DUNES. Fils de Cultivateur (Hondschootois) ils le devint lui même. Il était domicilié à la ferme DECOCK au lieu dit 'La Petite mare' . Après les élections du 20 Mai 1883, et à l'arrêté préfectoral du 28 Mai 1883, il fut élu Premier Maire de BRAY-DUNES au cours de la réunion du 10 Juin 1883 qui se tint dans la salle du cours d'hydrographie. Au cours de ce premier conseil, 9 élus étaient présents sur 12. Pierre DECOCK fut élu au premier tour par 7 voix contre 2. (1 à Auguste COOLEN et 1 à Jules DAULE). Auguste COOLEN Fut quant à lui élu Adjoint par 6 Voix contre 3 (2 à Jules DAULE et 1 à Benoît VERHULST) Pierre DECOCK occupa cette charge jusqu'au 18 Mai 1884.
