Charles Henry WATSON Researched and compiled by Susan L. Harnwell Charles Henry Watson and Jane Prior, his first wife. (from my personal family collection; digital frame is my design.) Charles Henry WATSON was born 12 March 1824 in New Braintree, Massachusetts. This, at least, is the statement he made when he joined the Army in 1840. However, a thorough check of New Braintree records has failed to turn up any proof. His sister, Frances Elizabeth, was born two years later, and her death certificate states that their parents were John WATSON and Nancy GRILLOW. In spite of over 20 years research, I have never been able to locate any first hand documentation on Charles H. Watson's ancestors. In February 1842, he was reduced to private for reasons that remain unclear. In March, his sister, Frances, married William Slocum HALL , a shoemaker, born in Sutton Massachusetts. It appears to have been an elopement, since she was only 16, and the couple were married in Thompson, Connecticut. Perhaps, Charles' difficulties were somehow connected with his sister's marriage and the possible absence of parents in their lives. The Aroostook crisis was settled by the Webster-Asburton Treaty in 1842, and Charles Watson was reassigned to Ft. Adams in New Port, R.I. In February 1843, he deserted but reported back to his unit two months later.

Henry L. Watson Letters Home Collections Personal Watson 1861-1909 Table of Contents History Location of Record Inventory HISTORY Henry L. Watson was born March 24,1842 in Arkansas. When he was six years old his family moved to Kigore, Texas in Rusk County. On September 16, 1861, Henry, who was a farmer, enlisted in the cavalry, Company F. Tenth Regiment at Camp Flornoy under Colonel M.F. Locke. Watson signed to serve for only one year, but ended up finishing out the war. n 1863, Watson wrote to his parents about his company having to dismount their horses and continue on foot. Later in the battle at Murfreesborough, his regiment was noted for their "valor and unflinching bravery." In the midst of the war, Henry returned to Rusk County long enough to marry Mary J. Robertson on July 7, 1864. After the war ended, he returned to Rusk County to resume cotton farming. Henry L. Watson died in Rusk County, October 4,1916. They both worked, Henry as a barber and Eliza as a washerwoman , both typical jobs for free blacks. Tax records indicate that they owned a small lot in town , valued at $200. We cannot determine whether this was their home or Henry's shop, or possibly both. It seems likely, however, that the building was their home. A search of the census for their page and house number reveals that two other families lived with the Watsons. All eight of the residents were African-American, and each family owned some personal property, although only a minimal amount. The Watsons were not only listed first in the household, but also were the only family to own any real estate. Thus it seems likely that the Stevensons and the Ellets rented from the Watsons. Unfortunately no records survive that can cast any light on the relationships that may have existed among these three families. John and Elizabeth Ellet were approximately the same ages as Henry and Eliza Watson; they might have been siblings or cousins. Thomas and Sarah Stevensons were in their mid- to late-twenties; Sarah might have been the daughter of either the Watsons or the Ellets. Or she and Eliza Watson may have worked together as washerwomen. No other records exist for the Watsons. I., November 8th, 1829. He is the only son of the late Hon. William Robinson Watson, and Mary Anne Watson. His father was graduated at Brown University in 1823, in the same class with Chief Justice Ames of R. I., George D. Prentice, the distinguished editor of the Louisville Journal , and Judge Mellen, of Mass. He was admitted to the bar, but engaged to only a limited extent in the practice of his profession. His life was devoted preeminently and almost exclusively to politics For nearly forty years he was one of the most active and prominent politicians in Rhode Island, and probably no individual has ever exerted a greater influence in its local politics. Few men in Rhode Island have written as much on political topics as Mr. Watson. The most elaborate of these writings were a series of papers first published in the Providence Daily Journal, in 1844, over the signature of "Hamilton," which were afterwards collected and printed in a pamphlet form.
