The Chauvenet Prize, consisting of a prize of $1,000 and a certificate is awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Association to the author of an outstanding expository article on a mathematical topic by a member of the Association. First awarded in 1925, the Prize is named for William Chauvenet, a professor of mathematics at the United States Naval Academy. It was established through a gift in 1925 from J.L. Coolidge, then MAA President. Winners of the Chauvenet Prize are among the most distinguished of mathematical expositors.

Mathematics at Binghamton: the early days
Professor Emeritus James R.F. Kent talks to Ross Geoghegan
RG: I'm talking to Jim Kent about the early years of the Mathematics Department at Triple Cities College, then Harpur College, then the State University of New York at Binghamton, now called Binghamton University. Jim, I thought I'd begin by asking you to tell me how you came to Binghamton. What was the professional background? JK: RG: That was in Endicott? JK: The original campus was in Endicott, yes, in the Colonial Building with prefabs for additions and it was very primitive. When I started in the Mathematics Department in 1948 what they needed was a four year program, 3rd and 4th year undergraduate courses. So I set up that major program in Mathematics and the faculty there was just myself and Miss Wright, who was an Assistant Professor, and Felix Bernstein, the famous Felix Bernstein of the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem. He was a pretty old fellow, nice old guy but he was sick and he wasn't able to stay more than a couple of years. When I came he was already in the hospital and so we had to have a substitute take his courses over. RG: Did you ever know Bernstein personally?

The department offers two degree programs in mathematics, the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Science degree. The requirements for a major in mathematics are described below. An entering student with a strong mathematical background is encouraged to take the examinations for advanced placement, since high scores on these examinations may exempt students from certain freshman courses at the option of the department chair. Mathematics majors are expected to exhibit progress toward a degree. Students with less than a 2.50 cumulative grade point average in mathematics courses taken at the University of Houston will be advised to discontinue as mathematics majors.

joint research with
D. Daniel, J. Nikiel, M. Tuncali and E. D. Tymchatyn A continuum is a compact connected Hausdorff space. In earlier work, we raised the following question. Let X denote a locally connected continuum such that X is rim-metric and such that X contains no non-degenerate metric subcontinuum. Is X rim-finite and therefore the continuous image of a compact ordered space. We study this question. We also use the results of this study to obtain analogues of a classical result of Whyburn. Date received: February 13, 2002

Creating the Tech
  • In 1917, Gov. Jim Ferguson ignored the wishes of the locating committee and arbitrarily chose Abilene as location for the proposed school. West Texans asked that the bill be withdrawn, and Ferguson became the first Texas governor to be impeached. In 1921 the bill to create a new college was vetoed by Gov. Pat Neff. This angered West Texans so much they threatened to secede and form their own state, taking with them the revenue generated by West Texas' valuable farm, ranch and oil lands.
