Renegade CIA Agent,
Spy and Arms Dealer
for Muammar Qaddafi
A one-time operative for U.S. navy intelligence, Edwin Wilson went on to spend sixteen years working for the CIA . As a so-called expert on the Middle East, Wilson , by the early 1970s, began to collect data that would serve his own interest. In 1971, he met and befriended one of the brains trust members of the CIA , the brilliant Waldo "Doobie" Dubberstein , a CIA analyst who was entrusted with America's top secrets, ranging from the design of nuclear missiles to the Pentagon's contingency atomic war plans.
Wilson , who had planned to leave the CIA and establish a private intelligence agency of his own, cultivated Dubberstein , who, in addition to his top intelligence position with the CIA and the Pentagon , was one of the world's leading archeologists and biblical scholars.
In 1978, the hulking Wilson met with Dubberstein , telling him that he was on a hush-hush mission concerning Libya, or so Dubberstein later claimed. Dubberstein was then senior officer in charge of analysis of the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa for the Pentagon 's Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) , and could give him considerable help. He was also chief adviser to the

    About the Author
Edwin Henry Wilson, a popular Unitarian minister, was one of the founders and preeminent leaders of the modern humanist movement. He was an editor and signer of the original humanist manifesto, the first editor of The Humanist magazine, an organizer of the International Humanist and Ethical Union, and the founder of the Fellowship of Religious Humanists. More about the author
    About the book
The First Half-Century of Humanism To tell the story of the document that crystallized the principles and ideals of contemporary humanism is to tell the story of the origins of the humanist movement itself. Conceived from a convergence of freethought and religious liberalism at the end of the nineteenth century, born out of the global upheaval of World War I, nourished by the cultural revolutions of the 1920s, modern humanism came of age in 1933 with the publication of "A Humanist Manifesto." This statement of fifteen affirmations on cosmology, biological and cultural evolution, human nature, epistemology, ethics, religion, self-fulfillment, and the quest for freedom and social justice explicitly delineated the leading ideas and aspirations of its era. Changing times, however, brought new challenges—the rise of fascism, World War II, the spread of communism, the Cold War—with consequent calls to revise or replace the manifesto. These appeals, too, make up part of the early history of the humanist philosophy and the people who fostered its development.

EDWIN H. WILSON: UNITARIAN HUMANIST LEADER
by Teresa Maciocha, editor and social activist Edwin Henry Wilson was born on August 23, 1898, in Woodhaven, New York. He was raised in Concord, Massachusetts, where he attended the First Parish Church, a Unitarian fellowship. Wilson's father had no use for the church; it was his mother who introduced him to Unitarianism, albeit of the conservative variety.
Following his ordination in 1928, Wilson became a practicing Unitarian minister in Dayton, Ohio, where he eventually became minister emeritus. Over the next sixty-five years, he had pulpits in Schenectady, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Yellow Springs, Ohio; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Cocoa Beach, Florida.
Throughout his life, Wilson maintained a dedication to learning, but it was during the period when he was a matriculated student that he became exposed to and convinced of the validity of the humanist outlook. His conviction that "humanism has time, science, and human need on its side" proved to be life-long.

    The CIA's Great Gatsby PARADE
September 18, 1993 by Edward Jay Epstein Within a year, three witnesses in an investigation died. Rafael Villaverde. a Cuban refugee. disappeared at sea after his speedboat exploded off the coast of Florida; Kevin Mulcahy. an electronics expert. was found dead in an isolated motel in the Shenandoah Valley-apparently a victim of exposure; and Waldo Dubberstein, an archaeologist and expert on the Middle East, died of a shotgun blast to his head-a presumed suicide. All three had worked for the CIA and, in the mid 1970s. became involved in mysterious conspiracies plotted by a former CIA agent named Edwin P. Wilson. A series of investigations by various federal agencies, begun in 1976 led to Wilson's indictment in 1980 and disclosed the following pieces of a murderous puzzle. Villaverde, who had served the CIA as a saboteur in Cuba, was recruited by Wilson as a hired gun and promised a million dollars for an assassination in Egypt. Mulcahy, a CIA specialist in secret communications technology. was hired to supervise the smuggling of electronic and military equipment. Dubberstein, an ex-CIA man whose subsequent work for the Pentagon included compiling the daily military intelligence summary for the Secretary of

in BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS NAS 41 Courtesy NASA SpaceLink Edwin Hubble, by his inspired use of the largest telescope of his time, the 100 inch reflector on the Mount Wilson Observatory, revolutionized our knowledge of the size, structure, and properties of the universe. Hubble advanced the astronomical horizon on the universe by steps relatively as large in his time as those taken by Galileo in his studies of the solar system, and by the Herschels in their investigations of our own Milky Way stellar system. Edwin Hubble thus became the outstanding leader in the observational approach to cosmology, as contrasted with the previous work that involved much philosophical speculation. Edwin's mother was Virginia Lee James, from Virginia City, Nevada, and his father was John Powell Hubble, from Missouri, where Edwin himself was born in Marshfield on November 20, l889, during a visit of the parents to his grandparents. He liked and read many books, such as novels by Jules Verne and H. Rider Haggard, especially King Solomon's Mines. His father was connected with an insurance company; he had his office in Chicago and settled his family in suburban Wheaton.
