The Lights Out puzzle consists of 25 lights arranged in a square. When a light is touched, that light and each of the adjacent lights is toggled on or off. The students in this project were asked to develop a mathematical model for the puzzle and to determine how to turn off all of the lights starting with any given set of lights turned on. JohnWilson English composer, lutenist and singer. He was active in London at court and in the theatres from 1614. Employed as successor to Robert Johnson through 1623 as composer for the King's Men, probably taking over as principal song writer in 1617 after a period of collaboration. Wilson earned a place among the London waits in 1622, backed by Viscount Mandeville and the King's favorite Buckingham. He entered the King's Musick among the lutes in 1635; Oxford University granted him the D.Mus in 1644, and he was professor of music there from 1656 to 1661. He became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1662. Wilson as a composer of songs was quite robust; a 'hit or miss' composer given to quirkishness when not being downright popular. His playsongs display less versatility than those of Robert Johnson. He could write a good straightforward tune, indeed, he had the common touch, and some of his songs may be mistaken for genuine ballads. John Wilson ("Christopher North") John Wilson was born in Paisley on 18 May 1785. His mother, Margaret Sym, was a descendant of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose; his father was a businessman who died in 1795, leaving Wilson a fortune. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he distinguished himself as a poet and athlete. His long blond hair, powerful physique and taste for exhibitionism all helped get him noticed. After graduating he bought the small estate of Elleray in Windermere (now a girls' school), where he was a friend of the Wordsworths and Thomas de Ouincey. In 1811 he married Jane Penny, the daughter of a Liverpool merchant, and in 1812 he published his first collection of poems. In 1814 financial problems forced him to move to Edinburgh where he qualified as an advocate, but never practised. Wilson joined the literary circle of the publisher William Blackwood (1776-1834), and became friendly with John Gibson Lockhart and James Hogg . In 1817 Blackwood launched the "Edinburgh Monthly Magazine" under the editorship of James Cleghorn and Thomas Pringle , but he sacked them after six issues, and Wilson and Lockhart stepped in to edit the journal under the new name "Blackwood's Magazine". I John: Introduction and Chapter 1 Introduction This commentary was written over the course of approximately 300 hours for a Greek Exegesis course, so it will have a significant focus on analyzing the Greek text of the first Epistle of John. The author of the book is indisputably the Apostle John, brother of James, and the youngest of Jesus' disciples. He wrote the book late in life, after a long time of leadership of the Church at Jerusalem. It was probably written from the vicinity of Ephesus between 80 and 90 A.D. John states that he is writing TO "the ones who believe in the Name of the Son of God" (5:13), and that WHAT he is writing is a fresh reminder of an old commandment, namely that Christians should believe that Jesus is God and should love one another (2:7-8). He is writing CONCERNING "those who are trying to deceive you" (2:26), whom he also calls "antichrists." These people are probably Gnostics who came along behind Paul in Macedonia, teaching that Jesus was merely a being in a divine hierarchynot Godand that there was such a dichotomy between flesh and spirit that one could know God in a mystical, spiritual sense and let his fleshly body do anything it wants. These antichrists had apparently really shaken the faith of the believers, and John is writing to assure them of the basic tenants of the faith to counteract those Gnostics. John states that what CAUSED him to write is the knowledge that his audience has been forgiven of sin, knows God, and has overcome the evil one (2:12-14), or in other words, they "know the truth" (2:21). John's stated purpose in writing, therefore, is that "joy may be made complete" (1:4) and "that you may know that you have eternal life" (5:13).

MY BROTHER, JOHN John and I went to the Quaker school at Pardshow Hall. John was quick at studies and tireless at mathematical problems. John Fletcher, the master, was a superior man who did not use the rod to hammer in learning. He was to provide John with a superb background and lifelong quest for knowledge. Elihu Robinson, a rich Quaker gentleman, became John's mentor and another source of mental stimulation in mathematics and science, especially meteorology. When my brother was twelve, he opened a school in Eaglesfield. He was threatened by the older boys who wanted to fight with the young master, but apparently he managed to control them for two years. Due to the poor salary, John returned to the land briefly and worked for our rich uncle. Meanwhile, I had left home to assist George Bewley with his school at Kendall. When John joined me in 1781, we planned to run the school together when cousin George retired. In 1785 our school opened and we offered English, Latin, Greek, French, along with twenty-one mathematics and science subjects. Mary came to keep house for us. Although we had sixty pupils, we were often forced to borrow and take outside jobs to support ourselves. Once, on our mother's birthday, John bought her some very special stockings. This was to be a treat for she always wore homespun stockings. Mother exclaimed to John, "Why did you buy me scarlet stockings?" John had thought they were blue and turned to me to verify their suitable color. Since we both saw blue instead of scarlet, Mother took the stockings out to some of the other women. So at the age of twenty -six, John discovered that we were both color-blind. John experimented and wrote about this phenomenon in his first important scientific paper. Many years later when John had an audience with the King, he refused to wear the customary dress which included a sword. In a compromise, he agreed to wear his Oxford honorary doctoral robe. John thought the robe was grey, but in reality it was red, which at that time was not an appropriate color for a Quaker. The condition of color-blindness came to be known as Daltonism in France.

flame still sears BY GARY MORRIS Perhaps the most prodding of the pack was queer film artiste Jack Smith (1932-1989). The emphasis on film is misleading and limiting, however. Smith, who was raised in trailers in Ohio and Texas Flaming Creatures and Normal Love Flaming Creatures Flaming Creatures (1963) was not his first film; that distinction belongs to The Buzzards of Baghdad By all accounts, Smith was difficult but charismatic, a magical trickster manically involved in all kinds of projects at all times. Never far from poverty in spite of a few grants here and there, he was gifted in seducing actors and friends to work for free and in "appropriating" materials he needed for his art. For Creatures and the films that followed, he used cheap, sometimes discarded, color reversal stock to immortalize the drag queens , mermaids, vampires , naked poets, and other "creatures" who populate his films. The effect is of a dream that stubbornly resists consciousness, the imagery sometimes subtle and painterly, sometimes stark and high-contrast in rendering the filmmaker’s ecstasy-drenched demimondes. Smith was raised on Hollywood kitsch, and the imagery of 1940s movie monsters, and especially his patron saint Maria Montez — to whom he built an altar and prayed — inspired him. Always a good talker, he insisted on Montez’s importance as an actress to all who would listen (and there were many). He called her "the Holy One" and "the Miraculous One." After a screening of one of her films, he told a friend, "The Miraculous One was raging and flaming. Those are the standards for art."
