LAYOUT. First comes the name of the parents in BLOCK CAPITALS; then the births/baptisms of their children in chronological order. Usually two dates have been given, the first being the birth and the second the baptism. With children born and baptised in the same month, the year has only been given once - eg. for a person born 6 July 1849 and baptised 26 July 1849, it has been indexed either as 6/26 July 1849, but more usually as 6 July/26 July 1849. A dash (-) equates to no birth or baptismal entry in the original register.

Record of the Wishart Family
By Anne Galloway
Submitted May 1997 [This information came from several sources. A typewritten copy of a mss. by Mr. B. Wishart of So. Minneapolis, MN, whose record ends in 1902; Crumrine's History of Washington Co. PA, 1884; The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, 1884; family records, and my own researches.] Dr. John Wishart and Dr. James Wishart who practiced in Washington Co PA in the early 1800s were sons of Dr. David Wishart of Perthshire in Scotland and Bedford Co. PA. It is possible that James Wishart, a charter member of Chartiers Presbyterian Church in Washington Co (1798) was their uncle. The two brothers were born in Scotland and came to the U.S. in 1796 with their parents and other brothers and sisters. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland, on 1 July 1796 and "after a tedious and dangerous voyage, being shipwrecked off Little Egg Harbor," they landed at New York on 8 September. Dr. David Wishart bought land on Yellow Creek in Bedford Co. and lived there for the rest of his life. He was born on 9 August 1752 in Kincardine, Perthshire, and died after 1830 in PA. His wife was Janet Belches (18 May 1762- d. after 1806), dau of James and Catherine Waterman Belches. David and Janet had thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy. Dr. John Wishart, their oldest son (24 March 1781-19 June 1864) was b. in Perthshire, grew up in Bedford co., worked on the family farm and studied medicine with his father. "In 1806 he entered the University of Philadelphia, and after a full course graduated in the spring of 1808. He married Mary, a daughter of Robert Tate, Esq., and removed to Washington, and opened an office October 3rd of that year, 'at the house of Mrs. Dodd, nearly opposite the courthouse,' now (1884) the site of Hasting's hardware store and the Washington Savings-Bank." Crumrine.

Protestantism Triumphant. George Wishart being taken to St Andrews, where he was burnt, and John Knox.
George Wishart was born near Montrose and was a schoolmaster at the grammar school there, where he incurred a charge heresy. His crime was to teach the Greek New Testament. George Wishart fled first to England then to the continent of Europe, living mostly in Germany and Switzerland. During this time he translated into English the Swiss Confession of Faith which represented the doctrines of the Reformation. On returning to Scotland, George Wishart vigorously preached the doctrines of the Reformation. George Wishart’s inflammatory sermons antagonised Cardinal David Beaton (or Bethune), who had Wishart arrested in January 1546 and taken to St Andrews. He cautioned John Knox not to seek martyrdom with him at that time with the words, "Return to your bairns and God bless you. One is sufficient for a sacrifice." Convicted of heresy, George Wishart, the most gentle and human of the Scottish Reformers, was burned at the stake in St Andrews on March 1

Sir john married Jean, daughter of William Douglas, 9th Earl of Angus in 1592. Inrecognition of this important marriage, the wishart Arms were incorporated in
http://www.wishart.org/sirjohnwischeard.html
Sir John Wischeard, who succeeded to the lands and barony of Pitarrow in 1576, was another strong Protestant and a leading member of the first congregation against Catholicism. He became a member of the Scottish parliament and the Privy Council in 1560, and distinguished himself against the Earl of Huntly at the battle of Corrichie in 1562. However, according to John Knox, Queen Mary hated him because "he flattered her not in her dancing and other things". In 1565, he was denounced as a rebel for opposing the marriage of Queen Mary with Lord Darnley, and was forced to flee to England. The Pitarrow estate was thus forfeited, but restored in the following year after the murder of David Rizzio, when Sir John returned to Scotland and was pardoned. In May 1567, he joined the confederacy against the Earl of Bothwell and was appointed an extraordinary Lord of Session. The following year Sir John accompanied the Regent Moray to York; but after the battle of Langside he switched his support to the Duke of Chatelherault and, in the cause of Queen Mary, joined Sir William Kirkcaldy as constable of the Castle of Edinburgh. He was one of eight people who supported Kirkcaldy in the siege of Edinburgh Castle until, in 1573, they capitulated to Morton and he was taken prisoner. In 1574 he was re-appointed an extraordinary Lord of Session. After his death in 1576, the Pitarrow estate and title passed to his nephew John Wischeard.

George Wishart, 1513-1546 A famous member of the Pitarrow family was the martyr George Wishart, a powerful Protestant preacher, confidant and mentor of John Knox. While preaching the Protestant Reform in 1546 he was betrayed to Cardinal David Beaton and imprisoned in the bottle dungeon at the Castle in St. Andrews. Subsequently he was tried for heresy, condemned to death and burnt at the stake outside the Castle. Some weeks later George Wishart's friends conspired against the Cardinal and gained entry to the Castle by subterfuge. They found Cardinal Beaton in his room, killed him and hung his body from the battlements. It is said that afterwards they formed, in the Castle, the first congregation of the Church of Scotland. The spot where George Wishart died is marked by the letters GW in cobblestones outside the Castle, and commemorated by a plaque nearby (erected jointly by the St. Andrews Preservation Trust and the Wishart Society). He is also recorded on the Martyr's Monument at St. Andrews, and in a painting by John Drummond entitled "George Wishart on his way to Execution Administering the Sacrament for the First Time in Scotland after the Protestant Reform".The painting below is entitled "Wishart's Last Exaltation", by Sir William Quiller Orchardson (1832-1910). It is reproduced courtesy of the University of St. Andrews.
