Chapter 2: Biochemistry
Hungarians and the Fermi Paradox Dear Dr. SETI:
What's this I hear about SETI and Hungarians? Supposedly it has something to do with the Fermi Paradox. MH, Hungary The Doctor Responds:
Physicist Enrico Fermi, said to be a firm believer in the existence of extra-terrestrials, was frustrated by the lack of firm evidence of their existence. Reasoning that advanced civilizations should by now have filled the Galaxy, Fermi came downstairs for lunch one afternoon at Los Alamos and blurted out his now-famous question, "Where are they?" "They are among us," it is reported that Hungarian-born physicist Leo Szilard responded, "but they call themselves Hungarians." Apparently, Szilard's comment had some cultural and historical basis. The following passage is from The Curve of Binding Energy by John McPhee (1973, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, pp. 104-105): So perhaps Szilard was trying to let his Italian-born colleague in on the secret. As it happens, I met with Teller recently, and can attest to the fact that he still has a thick Martian accent. He reminisced about Fermi's famous question, and when queried about Szilard's response, answered quite vehemently: "No! We're Martians!"

45. Russell's Paradox [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Examines selfreferential linguistics used to describe properties and sets.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/p/par-russ.htm
Russell's Paradox Russell's paradox represents either of two interrelated logical antinomies. The most commonly discussed form is a contradiction arising in the logic of sets or classes. Some classes (or sets) seem to be members of themselves, while some do not. The class of all classes is itself a class, and so it seems to be in itself. The null or empty class, however, must not be a member of itself. However, suppose that we can form a class of all classes (or sets) that, like the null class, are not included in themselves. The paradox arises from asking the question of whether this class is in itself. It is if and only if it is not. The other form is a contradiction involving properties. Some properties seem to apply to themselves, while others do not. The property of being a property is itself a property, while the propery of being a cat is not itself a cat. Consider the property that something has just in case it is a property (like that of being a cat ) that does not apply to itself. Does this property apply to itself? Once again, from either assumption, the opposite follows. The paradox was named after Bertrand Russell, who discovered it in 1901.
Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
History Russell's discovery came while he was working on his Principles of Mathematics . Although Russell discovered the paradox independently, there is some evidence that other mathematicians and set-theorists, including Ernst Zermelo and David Hilbert, had already been aware of the first version of the contradiction prior to Russell's discovery. Russell, however, was the first to discuss the contradiction at length in his published works, the first to attempt to formulate solutions and the first to appreciate fully its importance. But without the media blitz required to pierce the public’s consciousness, and without the full-scale support of the Olympics themselves, nothing changed. Four years later, Paralympians are still wearily explaining, "No, it’s not the Special Olympics …" For the record, let’s clarify: The Special Olympics are motivational games, an "everybody wins" challenge for people with mental and developmental disabilities. The Paralympics are the Olympics for athletes with physical disabilities. Paralympians are elite athletes who devote their lives to the pursuit of excellence in sport, and who qualify over a period of years through rigorous national and international competitions. They are the best of the best, yet they remain largely invisible to the American public.

The Fermi paradox Nick Bostrom Department of Philsophy, Logic and Scientific method London School of Economics n.bostrom@lse.ac.uk http://www.hedweb.com/nickb
There has been much speculation around Fermi's famous question: "Where are they? Why haven't we seen any traces of intelligent extraterrestrial life?". One way in which this question has been answered (Brin 1983) is that we have not seen any traces of intelligent extraterrestrial life because there is no extraterrestrial life because intelligent extraterrestrial life tend to self-destruct soon after it reaches the stage where it can engage in cosmic colonization and communication. This is the same conclusion as that of the Doomsday argument (i.e.: we are likely to perish soon), but arrived at trough a wholly different line of argument. One way to approach the Fermi paradox is to reformulate it in terms of a "Great Filter", as suggested by Robin Hanson in his excellent recent overview over the subject ( Hanson 1996 ). The "Great Filter" refers to the hypothetical mechanism(s) or principle(s) by which the great number of potential life-bearing planets get filtered out before they have produced intelligent life forms that expand into cosmos. Somewhere along the path from the existence of a suitable planet to the existence of a corresponding space-colonizing species there appears to be some unlikely step that almost always fails.

Lecture given Wednesday 27 October 1993 at a Physics - Computer Science Colloquium at the University of New Mexico. The lecture was videotaped; this is an edited transcript. It also incorporates remarks made at the Limits to Scientific Knowledge meeting held at the Santa Fe Institute 24-26 May 1994. What is the paradox of the liar? Well, the paradox of the liar is ``This statement is false!'' Why is this a paradox? What does ``false'' mean? Well, ``false'' means ``does not correspond to reality.'' This statement says that it is false. If that doesn't correspond to reality, it must mean that the statement is true, right? On the other hand, if the statement is true it means that what it says corresponds to reality. But what it says is that it is false. Therefore the statement must be false. So whether you assume that it's true or false, you must conclude the opposite! So this is the paradox of the liar. Now let's look at the Berry paradox. First of all, why ``Berry''? Well it has nothing to do with fruit! This paradox was published at the beginning of this century by Bertrand Russell. Now there's a famous paradox which is called Russell's paradox and this is not it! This is another paradox that he published. I guess people felt that if you just said the Russell paradox and there were two of them it would be confusing. And Bertrand Russell when he published this paradox had a footnote saying that it was suggested to him by an Oxford University librarian, a Mr G. G. Berry. So it ended up being called the Berry paradox even though it was published by Russell.

A Letter to FCC Chairman Michael Powell:
Support "Fail Fast"
The Hon. Michael Powell
Chairman
Federal Communications Commission Dear Mr. Chairman: We thank you for your leadership in FCC efforts to understand the causes of the current telecom debacle, and especially for convening the FCC's October 7, 2002, Telecom Recovery En Banc hearing. We were dismayed that several of the En Banc speakers confused causes with effects. We believe that balance sheet weakness, long-haul overcapacity, and even the recent speculative bubble, are effects, not causes. If we attempt to treat the symptoms, we risk missing the causes and prolonging the agony. We hold that the primary cause of current telecom troubles is that Internet-based end-to-end data networking has subsumed (and will subsume) the value that was formerly embodied in other communications networks. This, in turn, is causing the immediate obsolescence of the vertically integrated, circuit-based telephony industry of 127 years vintage. CLEC, IXC and ILEC bonds used to purchase now-obsolete infrastructure assets have become (or inexorably are becoming) bad debt. Weak last-mile competition prevents the most powerful technological advances from reaching all but a few customers; this is the largest cause of long-haul over-capacity. One En Banc participant, NYU Professor Larry White, had views that seem consistent with ours. He recommends that we let firms that are failing fail as quickly as possible. We believe that it would be harmful if government actions prevent, delay or interrupt this evolution. It must proceed if the United States is to continue to be a leading contributor to communications progress, and if its citizens are to benefit from the technologies that are now available and the applications that they enable.

Two articles on Software Architecture paradox, and how to defy that paradox to design resilient architectures.
http://www.Subrahmanyam.com/articles/architecture/Paradox.html
Architecture Paradox
Contents Introduction What is Software Architecture? Architecture Paradox Conclusion ... Part 2 Dr. Subrahmanyam Allamaraju
Introduction
A 1996 technical report from the Software Engineering Institute , in its introduction points out that software architecture is still a relatively immature area from both research and practice perspectives. The same holds true in 1999 after maturity and emergence of several generic as well as domain-specific architectures. Today, the area is largely immature not because of lack of research, but lack of its practice. But why is it difficult to practice software architecture? In commercial software industry, where products and applications are required to be built over very short time-frames with tight budgets, the term "architecture," though widely used, is rarely practiced as a concept or as an integral part of software building. Ironically, it is this specific industry segment that requires more emphasis on software architecture for at least two reasons: budgetary constraints, and shorter time to deployment. Both these factors demand protection of investments in information technology. Protection of investments requires protection of software architecture against changing requirements. In a nutshell, this is the focus of this article. While architecture is generally perceived to be crucial for any software development exercise, in practice, architectures are rarely part of software development life-cycles, when so, rarely complete, and when complete, rarely protected and adhered to. This is one of the reasons why changes to software are expensive. Despite this, architectures are sought by concerned parties in almost all software development projects.

http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/3022/
These are old fond paradoxes to make fools laugh i' the alehouse.
- Othello, Act 1, Scene 1
Paradoxes are as old as humankind. The ancient Greeks studied them intensely which eventually helped lead to the discovery of irrational numbers, and paradoxes are mentioned in the Bible: "It was one of their own prophets who said 'Cretans were never anything but liars, dangerous animals, all greed and laziness;' and that is a true statement." (Titus 1:12-13) Even today, we are surrounded by paradoxes such as Blackwood's "the more terrible the prospect of thermonuclear war becomes the less likely it is to happen," or the Moebius Strip - a topological paradox. For this article, we define a paradox as a statement or sentiment that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true in fact. Another way of thinking of a paradox is a statement that is actually self-contradictory and hence false even though its true character is not immediately apparent. One of the oldest paradoxes is the one cited by the Apostle Paul in his letter to Titus (see above.) The Liar Paradox is interesting because it cannot be true because it would make the speaker a liar and therefore what he says is false. Neither can it be true because that would imply that Cretans are truth-tellers, and consequently what the speaker says would be true. (For classic
