Hi! We're E and Pi, here to introduce you to Jon Bettencourt's web page on unsolved math problems. It's his final project for COSMOS, the math and science program he's in. Is he going to be surprised when he sees what we've done!
Our favorite problem is the one about e (pi* n) being close to integers, since it involves us! Although Pi says she likes the formula for any digit of pi better (of course).
To which Jon responds... I'm gonna get them for this! If E and Pi keep messing with this page, I'll have to get Bromine to get them off my back, and I know they don't want that!
More information on E and Pi
(the characters, not the numbers)
Anyway, I have been gathering information on unsolved problems from the Internet and other sources. Here are a few of the problems I have found and some information on some of them.
Some of these problems seem very simple, but end up with no simple proof or solution to them. As an example, Fermat's Last Theorem was very simple, but it took hundreds of years and some parts from very advanced branches of mathematics to solve it. So if one seems simple, don't try to solve it unless you know a lot of math.
More information about unsolved problems can be found with a search for unsolved problems on Google.com

Topics - Hilbert's 23 Unsolved Problems
In 1900, David Hilbert addressed the International Congress of Mathmaticians in Paris. In the address, he outlined 23 major mathematical problems that would be studied in the next century. The address was not only a collection of problems, it was also his philosophy of mathematics and problems important to that philosophy. Hilbert's Address Problem Proven True/False/? Comments 1a. Is there a transfinite number between that of a Denumerable Set and the numbers of the Continuum True/False This question was answered by and Cohen to the effect that the answer depends on the particular version of Set Theory assumed. 1b. Can the Continuum of numbers be considered a Well-Ordered Set This question is related to Zermelo's Axiom of Choice which was demonstrated in 1963 to be independent of all other axioms in Set Theory . There is no universally valid solution. 2. Can the axioms of logic be proven to be consistent? False Any formal system interesting enough to fomulate its own consistency can prove its own consistency if and only if it is inconsistent, derived from 3. Are there two tetrahedra which cannot be decomposed into congruent tetrahedra directly or by adjoining congruent tetrahedra.

    Solving the Problems

The promise of Unified Messaging (UM) is to deliver all messages - voice, email, SMS, instant messages, etc. - into one mailbox. Users can access voice mail using their computer, and email using the phone. This goal introduces several technical challenges, many of which have been met. However, it also introduces two user experience problems, which have not yet been solved.
    Modality Matching
The first of these problems is that of modality matching. When I listen to something on the phone, I hear it and (unless I am using a speaker phone) nobody else does. Telephones have evolved to support this one-listener use, and they are quite good at transmitting information verbally. Thus, messages are left with the reasonable assumption that only the intended recipient will hear the voicemail, especially when the welcome message indicates only one user (as opposed to "The Ballard Family" or "The Staff Phone"). Computers are similarly adept at transmitting information visually. If I get any auditory information on the computer, anybody can hear it, unlike with the telephone. The person in the next cubicle can hear my computer. (This is one reason why dictation has not taken off for most office workers.)

    Daniel Shanks

"The flavor of ... mathematics is in this book-this is its claim to distinction." Science Description The investigation of three problems, that of perfect numbers, that of periodic decimals, and that of Pythagorean numbers has given rise to much of elementary number theory, and the author shows how each result gives rise to further results and conjectures. He treats not only results and theorems ("solved problems") but also questions that are still open and conjectures ("unsolved problems"), making this a most exciting and unusual treatment. The author, a past editor of Mathematics of Computation , presents research done in the fifteen years between the first and second editions, with emphasis on results that were achieved with the aid of computers. The volume includes a substantial Bibliography.
