    Extractions: Case Study One A 3 year-old girl presents to your clinic with her parents who complain of behavioral changes for about a month (withdrawn, refusing to play, irritable). Recently the child has experienced night sweats, however her parents did not take her temperature. History for this child includes recurring ear infections during the past winter, which were treated with oral antibiotics, normal growth and development (75th percentile for weight and height), immunizations are up to date, NKA, and no current medications. During physical examination the girl is uncooperative, crying and complains that her legs “hurt”. She is afebrile, pulse is 130 per minute and regular, respirations are 16 per minute. She is sweating and her nose, fingers, and toes are erythematous; the skin on her fingers and toes are peeling. Her oral pharynx and abdomen appear normal on examination; lungs are clear to auscultation. In bilateral legs, point tenderness is negative, and she has full ROM. No swelling noted in bilateral ankles. Neurological exam is normal; there is no muscular atrophy. Other findings are unremarkable. Her parents report that normally their daughter enjoys social activities with her family. The family lives in a freshly painted house. Her 6 year-old sibling has not exhibited similar symptoms. Both parents are teachers and report good health. The family has no pets and has not traveled within the last year.

    Extractions: ELIMINATED Al Heier (202) 382-4374 To avoid possible health risks, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that the use of mercury compounds in indoor latex paint will be eliminated. In addition, warning labels will be required on all outdoor paint containing mercury stating that the paint is for outdoor use only. Effective on August 20, all further production of paints containing mercury must be labeled exclusively for exterior use. EPA prefers that consumers use paints which do not contain mercury when painting indoor surfaces. To deal with existing stocks of paint containing mercury, the National Paint and Coatings Assn. is working with paint manufacturers to re-label all paints with higher mercury levels (over 200 parts per million) for exterior use only. EPA believes that consumers may continue to use interior paint with lower mercury levels (200 parts per million or less) without unreasonable risk if they follow all label directions, which include ventilating thoroughly during and after use and minimizing exposure to children.

    Extractions: PROFESSION By Multiple Josef Warkany , known as the father of modern teratology—the study of birth defects—died June 22 at the age of 90 in Clifton, Ohio. Born in Vienna and a graduate of the University of Vienna, Warkany left his homeland in 1931. He settled in Cincinnati, and spent his entire career at the University of Cincinnati's Children's Hospital Research Foundation. Warkany was one of the first pediatricians to focus on the first nine months after conception. He identified the crippling disease of acrodynia and assisted in developing its cure. Acrodynia is a rare fetal disease that is characterized by a pink discoloration of the limbs, hair and teeth loss, hypertension, and weight loss; the disease is sometimes fatal. In the 1940s, Warkany also helped prove that diet and environmental factors are a large part of fetal health. Warkany's best-known work is a 1,300-page pediatric text called Congenital Malformations (Chicago, Year Book Medical Publishers Inc., 1971).
