Crawford, Ph.D. Problem-Oriented Diagnosis Paresthesias: A Practical Diagnostic Approach Paresthesias are abnormal sensations experienced in the absence of specific stimuli. These sensations are usually described as burning, tingling or numb feelings, although they may be described as feelings of cold, warmth, prickling, pins and needles, skin crawling or itching. The most common locations of paresthesias are the hands, arms, legs and feet, although paresthesias can be present anywhere on the body. Paresthesias are contrasted with dysesthesias, which are abnormal interpretations of appropriate stimuli. Paresthesias are common presenting complaints, and diagnosis is usually assisted by knowing the specific clinical presentations associated with various paresthetic syndromes.

Extractions: DEFINITION Guillain-Barré Syndrome is the name given to acute idiopathic polyneuritis in honour of the French neurologists who described the condition in two soldiers in 1916. Undoubtedly there had been earlier descriptions. In brief, it is a clinical syndrome of progressive muscle weakness and respiratory paralysis associated with absent reflexes, which develops over a period of three to four weeks, usually following a viral or other infection. The annual incidence is about two per 100,000 so that, for example, about 50 to 60 cases would be seen in Sydney each year. Early diagnosis is important since death from rapidly developing respiratory paralysis can occur if the illness is not recognised, and because there are now specific forms of treatment such as plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin that can help speed up recovery, reduce disability and prevent complications.

Extractions: Feature Article From The Winds GOVERNMENT ALLEGED TO HAVE USED MILITARY AND CIVILIAN POPULATIONS AS GUINEA PIGS GULF WAR SYNDROME TIP OF THE ICEBERG I f your highest ambition in life is to become a highly evolved medical guinea pig, the U.S. Army has a slogan for you, "Be all that you can be". It has become evident that many who join the ranks of Uncle Sam's military are viewed by their superiors in the Pentagon as just that: experimental animals to be used for secret inoculation and non-consensual medical research. Dr. Larry Goss, a Lawton, Oklahoma physician who has worked in Veterans Administration hospitals and clinics, caring for Gulf War veterans, had little regard for the rumors surrounding the origin of the supposed Gulf War Illness (GWI). That is, until he contracted the disease, himself, from the veterans he was treating. When his wife and son also became sick with the "fantasy" illness, as the government has attempted to label it, he became a staunch believer. His patriotic identity, Dr. Goss told The WINDS, "was the American flag and the Constitution. I should have been born on the Fourth of July," Goss said. "I came from a military family, I was for the militaryand," Goss added, "I'm thoroughly disgusted and disillusioned."

Extractions: Web Site The Life and Times of A Most Unique Man S o, just who is Zane Edward Miller, MD? He was a medical doctor trained and earned his American Boards in Neurology and Psychiatry. He was also a true humanitarian who loved people as well as an original thinker. To our knowlege he was also the worst surviving case of the neurological disorder known as Guillain-Barré Syndrome being completely paralyzed with this hideous disease for over 24 years. This web site is a tribute to his spirit, his Spartan will to survive and his tireless effort, in spite of a catastrophic illness, to help his fellow men and women to recognize and effectively deal with the preditors, psychopaths and sociopaths that make up the majority of our society and how not to be victimized by them. Zane Edward Miller was born on November 1, 1919 (really on Halloween 1919, but the hospital and his mother Lillian decided to make the recorded birthday the next day as it was a matter only minutes in either direction). He passed away suddenly, with his complete faculties, refusing to go to a hospital on April 28, 1996 at 3:30 AM. His two sons were present at the time. They said he passed away peacefully and looked with wonderment and astonishment to the upper corner of his bedroom just before he died. All medical doctors who had Zane Edward Miller under their care, as well as fellow alumni who knew that he was most likely dying (from the information given to them the day before), did not respond nor inquire as to his condition after his death. Nor did anyone send flowers or express condolance after his passing. A sad statement reflecting the condition of the medical practice in our society today.
