In 1995, I was a single mother with an undiagnosed ADHD child. Every day was a battle. My son's struggles with ADHD, the abusive treatment he was receiving from the hands of the "trained professionals" at his school, the lack of support from the medical community and my family, drove me to search for knowledge as well as for a way to protect my son's rights. What I found was very little. My frustrations eventually drove me to the internet. I created a web page about my experiences and what I had learned from them. I also created a place for parents in similar circumstances to post their challenges and issues and provided a forum for them to exchange information. Eventually, as information became available, I did my best to get it out to parents so that their children would not have to suffer as my son did. I never imagined that nine years later, the need for information would be as great if not greater than it was in 1995. Today, there are literally dozens of sites designed to help parents with ADD/ADHD, co-existing disorders, special needs and behavioral issues. Many of these sites are provided by medical professionals and others much more qualified than I am. That, along with real life issues such as my own health, caring for my parents and the transition of my children from teenagers to adults leaves me with less and less time to devote to my site the time and energy that my readers deserve.

In the first place, it is hardly a deficit of attention, but more of an overabundance of it. The problem is actually more with the inability to avoid distraction - to ignore the many things that demand our attention while we are trying to focus on one. This is particularly troublsome in the classroom setting, where any disruption is met with stern condemnation, or else becomes too much accepted, leading to the child being ignored. She unveiled literary treasures, inspiring me to take pleasure in reading beautiful works of art. By exposing me to the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Homer, she introduced me to vibrant characters that resided in whimsical, far-off places. She brought the works to life in her classroom. No, they didn't sit in those old dusty books.
