Extractions: A panic attack is a sudden rush of uncomfortable physical symptoms coupled with thoughts of impending doom (making a scene, heart attack, not being able to breathe). Although the first panic attack may take place in a distinct situation, further episodes are unpredictable as to time or place. One or more uncomfortable physical symptoms will be present in a severe form during an actual panic attack, such as increased heart rate, dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, inability to concentrate, and confusion. After a number of panic episodes, the individual can become afraid of being a helpless victim of panic. He or she may hesitate to be alone, to venture far from home, or to be in public places. Even when not experiencing an anxiety attack, the person with panic attacks often becomes increasingly nervous and apprehensive. He or she attempts to remain physically and psychologically tense in preparation for the next attack.

Sometimes the association of panic attacks occurs with areas where they have happened.

Extractions: One of my trickiest moments as a medical student was in my psychiatry finals when I was introduced to an apparently healthy young woman. I was told that she had a large collection of traffic tickets for abandoning her car in a one-way street at the entrance to a small bridge which crossed a river which ran through the centre of town. The examiner invited me to ask a few relevant questions to help establish the diagnosis. Ask a few questions Fortunately after a few nerve racking seconds I was able to put the pieces of the jigsaw together. I asked the following questions: did she have a fear of being in some sort of situation where there was no obvious or immediate escape? how would she feel strolling on a long beach or in the crowd at a football match? did she prefer to stay at home as much as possible - was it a "safe haven" for her?

Now it's usually used as a term to describe the fear of going into unfamiliar territory. I want to begin by saying that I'm not a medical professional and everything I write here is from my own personal experience and understanding of what I've read and heard...basically I write from the perspective of a layperson and as one who lives with anxiety disorders.
