We are linked to the Aicardi Syndrome Newsletter, Inc. ( AICNews@aol.com My daughter, Megan (b.d. 1971), is, we believe, the oldest known living girl (now a woman) with Aicardi syndrome and the first to be so diagnosed in North America. Meg is one of an identical twinship. Genetic consultation indicates her twin, Susan, is not affected. We also have a contact with a neurological paediatrician in Toronto who may have the largest number of girls with Aicardi syndrome in his practice - 7 clients (approx.). It is also becoming apparent, as more girls are diagnosed and have access to early infant stimulation and good health care, that there is a wide range of ability. Not all girls have severe developmental disabilities as, for example, is indicated in recent journal papers as Paediatric Neurology and The British Journal of Ophthalmology. Small sample sizes and subjects who had been institutionalized do not result in reliability or validity. The guideline should be that we cannot presume the potential of these girls therefore each should be given all opportunities and thus, as individuals, will let us know what they will be able to achieve.
