Extractions: Supra Ventricular Tachycardia or SVT What is SVT? How does SVT develop? The electrical system of the heart (conduction system) is a complex network of cells and fibers through which electrical impulses travel at lightening speed through the heart, triggering a heartbeat. The impulses are first sent out by the sinoatrial node (sinus node; S-A node), located in the top of the upper-right chamber of the heart (the right atrium). From there, the impulses spread through the atria and to the atrioventricular node (A-V node), where they are transmitted to the lower chambers of the hearts ventricles via the bundle branches. Once the impulses reach the ventricles, they serve as a set of instructions, causing the chambers to contract and pump out blood in a routine and consistent manner. If impulses are fired too fast, either from the heart's normal conduction system or from other parts of the heart, the heart will beat too quickly. In many cases, a temporary rapid heartbeat is not medically significant by itself. For instance, sinus tachycardia is a normal response to increased demands on the heart during exercise. However, persistent severe tachycardia can lead to greater damage and heart malfunction and even sudden cardiac death.

CA.Chik.26.70-73 Although Caraka often speaks in a style unfamiliar to western medicine, a close look at this quote reveals the relevant causes of heart disease and Arrhythmia in our culture. Ayurvedic medicine understood stress to be the cause of all disease some 5000 years ago while it was only in the past year that this concept attained western medical acceptance. They also knew that this stress, be it mental, physical or emotional would lodge toxins deeply into the tissues. Depending on the genetic predisposition (body type) of the individual, a specific disease would manifest. In Caraka, most diseases are prefaced with a list of common stressors that would likely cause a specific disease. In this case, the words, anxiety, terror and fear come close to describing the stressful state many of us currently live. We live in an unprecedented time of excess. Luckily, the AV node limits the number of signals that actually reach the lower chambers, so the whole heart usually does not contract at the 300 bpm rate. Like other forms of arrhythmia, AF may prevent the heart from pumping enough blood and oxygen to meet your body's needs. Precise causes of atrial fibrillation can be difficult to identify. High blood pressure and coronary artery disease are associated with AF, as are other heart and lung conditions such as disease of the heart valves, chronic lung disease and congestive heart failure. Otherwise normal hearts influenced by alcohol, stress, caffeine, severe infections or some drugs may experience AF. Sometimes, no underlying cause is identified. As you grow older, the risk of AF seems to increase, especially after age 60. AF is relatively common, affecting about 2 million Americans. Symptoms vary, so not everyone feels the same thing during AF. Some people with AF experience palpitations, a sudden fluttering or pounding in the chest. Sometimes, because your heart is not pumping efficiently during AF, you may feel dizzy, faint or short of breath.
