Extractions: To Contact Ken As a fairly new diagnosis to the DSM-IV manual, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), sometimes known as Attachment Disorder (AD), is frequently misunderstood, and is misdiagnosed as Bipolar Disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder as often as 70% of the time. Today, perhaps more so than at any point in history, kids are apt to be separated, ignored, or neglected by their birth parents, shuttled between multiple foster parents and day care workers, or traumatized by physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Even while physically present, some mothers are yet incapable of providing adequate care and attention for their children. RAD kids have learned that the world is unsafe, and that the adults around them cant be trusted to meet their needs. They have developed a protective shell around their emotions, isolating themselves from dependency on adult caregivers. Rather than depending on their parents or other adults to protect them, the protective shell becomes the childs only means of coping with the world. Dependent only upon themselves for protection, they come to see anyone who is trying to remove this protective barrier as a threat, not to their emotional well being, but to their very lives. They turn on those who seek to help them the most.

However, the stages of infancy and toddlerhood are more accurately portrayed by distinguishing bonding from attachment. They grow up with an impaired ability to trust that the world is a safe place and that others will take good care of them. Without this sense of trust, children believes that they must be hypervigilant about their own safety. They become extremely demanding and controlling in response to their fear. Emotionally they believe that if they do not control their world then they will die. Children without proper care in the first few years of life have an unusually high level of stress hormones, which adversely effect the way crucial aspects of the brain and body develop. Conscience development is dependent upon brain development and follows attachment. Therefore, these children lack prosocial values and morality as well as demonstrating aggressive, disruptive and antisocial behaviors.

In May of 1998 the Attachment Center of South Carolina (ACSC) officially opened. This was a long time dream for the agency since we have been serving clients and training therapists since 1989. We provide treatment for children with attachment problems/disorders, including Reactive Attachment Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other related disorders. We treat many children who, along with their attachment problems, have co-morbid conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, ADHD and other conditions. Target Population We will consider working with any child from birth to twenty-one years of age. The majority of the ACSCs clients are children ages four to sixteen who have been adopted or who are in the foster care system. We treat children with histories of abuse and neglect, multiple placements, histories of institutional care, and internationally adopted children. We have also treated children who live with their birth families. All services are on an outpatient basis.
