Mission Statement Bells Palsy Introduction If you have Bell’s Palsy or another type of facial paralysis you are not alone. Each year nearly 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. Bell’s Palsy is a weakness or complete paralysis of the facial muscles, and is the most common cause of facial paralysis. The cause of Bell’s Palsy is not completely understood but may be caused by a virus. In addition, even more Americans develop facial paralysis as a result of trauma, infection, tumors and other causes. The worldwide incidence of facial nerve paralysis and facial nerve disorders is unknown, but is substantial. Throughout this section we will talk about facial paralysis and Bell’s Palsy and often use these terms almost interchangeably. Bell’s Palsy is just one type of facial paralysis, and is different from other types of facial nerve paralysis. We will point out these distinctions where they are important. Facial paralysis is a weakness or lack of movement of the facial muscles. The facial muscles control facial movements and thus facial expression. Facial expression is such an important part of our daily interactions with others that paralysis of the facial muscles can have an enormous impact on our lives. Think about it. Facial paralysis impacts how we greet our spouse and kids in the morning; how we interact with colleagues and customers at work; how we socialize with friends and when meeting others. Facial paralysis can have a tremendous impact on self-esteem, even for the most successful and confident of us. Fortunately, in many patients the facial nerve weakness will improve on its own. For those whose facial nerve weakness does not improve spontaneously there are many treatment options.

    Extractions: THE SEVENTH CRANIAL NERVE (Facial nerve) The seventh cranial nerve or facial nerve is a paired structure, like the other cranial nerves. There is one facial nerve for each side of the face. The facial nerve travels a far distance from the centre of the brain (brainstem) out to the face. During much of its course the seventh nerve is encased in a bony canal. The seventh nerve or facial nerve as its name suggests subserves facial movement. Patients with Bells palsy have trouble lifting their eyebrow, closing their eyelid and with smiling on the affected side. The seventh nerve also dampens noise from the ear drum and helps with the sensation of taste.

    Extractions: Bell's palsy is an acquired weakness of one side of the face, due to an injury to the facial nerve . The symptoms on the affected side typically include inability to close the eye, to smile, wrinkle the forehead and whistle. Speech may be mildly slurred. Tearing occurs because the eye does not close completely. Taste sensation may be diminished on the front half of the tongue. Sounds may appear louder on the affected side (hyperacusis) this may be caused by paralysis of the stapedius muscle but also occurs independantly. Papillitis may be seen of the fungiform papillae of the affected side. Bell's palsy usually develops over hours to days. The peak involvement usually happens within several days. Mild pain behind the ear is common at onset, as is a subjective sensation of "numbness" of the affected side. Using acupuncture with pressure on otopoints (a combination group of acupoints) to treat 86 patients with facial spasm the researchers found that the condition was successfully alleviated in over 95 percent of the patients. Simple acupuncture and simple pressure on otopoints were respectively applied in two other groups of patients as controls. The total effective rates in these two groups were 92.1 percent and 62.5 percent respectively. However, the cure rates were 38.4 per cent in the acupuncture with pressure on otopoints, 15.8 in acupuncture alone and 5 percent using pressure on otopoints alone respectively.

Your doctor will often prescribe a lubricant for your eye.
