She knew something was seriously wrong with her, but doctors couldn't figure it out. Large cysts were appearing under her skin, making daily living very uncomfortable. "It felt like someone was squeezing everything inside of me," said Theriault, a mother of a young daughter. "It felt like arthritis." After two years, Theriault found a cyst in her breast while doing a self-examination. Thinking it was breast cancer, she had surgery to get it removed. It turned out to be non-cancerous. She also had a cyst the size of a softball removed from her elbow. Because Theriault didn't have a family doctor, it was hard to keep track of what was going on but finally, after a trip to the emergency room because her elbow wasn't healing properly, the mystery was solved.

Solitary cutaneous lesions are also possible with this organism, however it is more common for cutaneous lesions to be linked to a systemic infection. This month's fungus is one of the nasty ones that can cause a severe lung infection in humans. It is also especially common in some areas as a disease of dogs. Blastomyces dermatitidis is one of the dimorphic fungi, which means it has two forms. At room temperature is takes the mycelial form shown below, forming a single conidium that looks kind of like a lollipop. At 37 o C, the mycelium transforms to a large yeast (8-15 um) with characteristic thick cell walls and broad-based buds (shown to the left). In this form, and with the typical lactophenol cotton blue stain, it is known as the Big Blue Broad Based Budding yeast - Blasto Each yeast is multinucleate with 2-5 nuclei per cell. Blastomycosis may be limited to the lungs or also involve the skin and bones. In its most severe form, the infection can spread throughout the body and involve many organ systems (systemic). Description Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis . Although primarily an airborne disease, farmers and gardeners may become infected from contact with spores in the soil through cuts and scrapes. The fungus that causes the disease is found in moist soil and wood in the southeastern United States, the Mississippi River valley, southern Canada, and Central America. Blastomycosis is also called Gilchrist's disease, Chicago disease, or North American blastomycosis. Another South and Central American disease, paracoccidioidomycosis, is sometimes called South American blastomycosis, but despite the similar name, this disease is substantially different from North American blastomycosis. Canine blastomycosis, a common dog disease, is caused by the same fungus that infects humans. However, people do not get this disease from their dogs except only very rarely through dog bites. Blastomycosis is a rare disease infecting only about 4 in every 100,000 people. It is at least six times more common in men than in women and tends to more often infect children and individuals in the 30-50 year old age group. People who have diabetes mellitus or who are taking drugs that suppress the immune system (immunocompromised) are more likely to develop blastomycosis. Although people with AIDS can get blastomycosis because of their weakened immune system, blastomycosis has not been one of the more common fungal infections associated with AIDS.
