Acute bronchitis is the inflammation of the mucous membrane that lines the bronchi (brawnk-eye), or main passages of the lungs, and usually only lasts a few days. It is often caused by a viral infection and may begin after you develop a cold or sore throat. The first symptom is an uncomfortable cough which often produces a thick yellowish or grayish phlegm (flem). Other symptoms include pain in the upper chest, wheezing, and fever. Make yourself comfortable and avoid cold air, tobacco smoke, and air pollution. Inhaling steam from a running shower or vaporizer may help to clear nasal passages. Your doctor may also recommend cough medicine, antibiotics, and bed rest. Chronic bronchitis usually persists for long periods of time and occurs most often in heavy smokers or as the result of recurring episodes of acute bronchitis. People with chronic bronchitis should not smoke and should avoid cold, polluted, and smoky environments. They should also stay away from people with colds, which could lead to another attack of bronchitis. C hronic bronchitis is one of the principal manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. About 10 million Americans are affected by some degree of COPD; it causes 40,000 deaths annually. Chronic bronchitis is a clinical diagnosis characterized by a cough productive of sputum for over three months' duration during two consecutive years and airflow obstruction. These requisites exclude more transient causes of cough associated with sputum production, such as acute bronchitis. The airflow obstruction in chronic bronchitis is caused by excessive tracheobronchial mucus production and is distinct from the anatomic findings of distal air space distention and alveolar septa destruction, which define emphysema. Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for the development of chronic bronchitis. Over 90 percent of patients with chronic bronchitis have a smoking history, although only 15 percent of all cigarette smokers are ultimately diagnosed with some form of obstructive airway disease.

It is a potentially dangerous problem because it starts so quietly that many people do not realise that they have it. It is characterized by chronic course and recurrent episodes. In some chronic cases, the disease may progress to chronic obstructive emphysema and chronic pulmonary heart disease. In TCM, this disease is related to the categories of "ke sou" (cough), "tan yin" (phlegm retension), "xiao chuan" (asthma) and so on. Main Points of Diagnosis 1. Long-term cough, sputum production and dyspnea which attack repeatedly and fluctuate are worse in autumn and winter. There may be fever, exacerbation of cough and mucopurulent sputum production, and dyspnea is more marked if acute concurrent infection is present. 2. Chronic bronchitis usually persists for many years. It can be classified into 3 stages, acute episodic stage, chronic persistent stage and clinically remissive stage. The last stage may last for a period of time and an attack may be induced by infections or catching a cold. Based on the clinical manifestations, the disease can be divided into simple chronic bronchitis and chronic asthmatic bronchitis. In the former, cough and sputum production are predominant. In the latter, in addition to the above symptoms, there are dyspnea and wheezing, indicating that the spasm of the smooth muscles of bronchi and bronchioli is an important pathogenic factor.

They are also called bronchial tubes. When the airways are irritated, thick mucus forms in the tubes. The mucus plugs up the tubes and makes it hard for you to get air into your lungs. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis include a cough that produces mucus (sometimes called sputum), trouble breathing and a feeling of tightness in your chest. What causes chronic bronchitis? Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. When tobacco smoke is breathed into the lungs, it irritates the airways which then produce mucus. People who have been exposed for a long time to things that irritate their lungs, like chemical fumes, dust and other substances, can also get chronic bronchitis. How does my doctor know if I have chronic bronchitis? Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms: Are you coughing up mucus? Are you having trouble breathing? Does your chest feel tight? Do you smoke cigarettes? How many cigarettes do you smoke each day? How many years have you been smoking? Have you been breathing in other things that can irritate your lungs? If your doctor thinks you have chronic bronchitis, you may be tested to find out if your lungs are damaged. You might have a pulmonary function test to see how well your lungs are working. With this test, you breathe into a machine that measures the amount of air in your lungs. Your doctor may also order blood tests and a chest x-ray.
