Extractions: Albín Brunovský and The Book Illustration The work of Albín Brunovský, one of the famous slovak graphic artists, has been interpreted only from the phenomenological side of fine art as an independent and isolated artistic expression separated from the other artistic disciplines and political aspects, too. In general, recent points of view on the development of the artist s personality can be characterised as follows. The beginning of his independent work during the sixties is supposed to be linked to a tra ining given by V. Hloník who made familiarised with surrealism. The surrealistic fantasy of Brunovský was based on the destruction of realistic objects, especially figures, and their reconstruction into illogical groups of the new realities with hidden social and moral meanings. After the author s visit to Italy in 1968 new aspects started to prevail in his work, mainly manneristic variations of the naturals motifs with fragments of figures were also influenced by the order of a monumental painting in some hotel. The work from 1972 1975 is even called the temporary period on his way to the reality of home by the author s monographist ¼. Peterajová. After 1975 the fantasy and photographic realism started, and is believed to have been under the influence of

The vocabulary scale varied from "no variation in vocabulary" to "always varied vocabulary (extensive)" (see Appendix 1, pp.203-4 for the scales used). [CHILD LANGUAGE; ORAL NARRATIVES; SOTHO] Aim: to create a word list for German elementary school children. Everything written by 10 children in year 4 of the Grundschule during the whole academic year was analyzed. TTR (actually inverse TTR: Tokens/Types) was used for the content words remaining after the 200 most frequent had been removed. Content words as a percentage of types increased with sample size (p.117). [CONTENT WORDS; ELEMENTARY SCHOOL; GERMAN; TTR; TYPE-TYPE RATIO; WRITING]

Extractions: But the wierdest thing about the scheme is that when you do find out about it and you do make an appointment to view, say, a piece of furniture, more often than not you find that the owner is not used to members of the public actually exercising their rights and that viewing the item is a little more tricky than you might have thought. For example; Sir Evelyn de Rothschild paid up to in tax rather than let us see his artworks. All he would have had to do would have been to open his house for us out of season, but after transporting his Gainsborough painting all the way to London rather than let us in, he took all his items off the Register (and therefore must have paid the tax). Another example; when we tried to see Sir Nicholas Soames' mahogany three-tiered buffet with partially reeded, slender, balluster upright supports we were threatened with a D-notice. He eventually had the buffet moved to Christies Security warehouse rather than allow us into his house. The trip was such a success that we decided to make the buffet-view an annual event. However just as the first "Nicholas Soames' Buffet Appreciation Society" viewing was about to take place, Sir Nicholas "reluctantly" decided to withdraw the item from public view and pay about £8000 in tax. This is a great shame but it's not the end of the world since Sir Nicholas owns up to 30 other items on the register, which we are sure you'd like to see.

Dreams: Gilliam Early Life Interview But later I began to draw using works of art that I really admired, such as brueghel'sand Bosch's. Is that what they call the syndrome of Stendhal ? http://www.smart.co.uk/dreams/tgearly.htm
Extractions: Edited by Phil Stubbs This page contains an interview with Terry Gilliam abut his early life in the United States. It was compiled by Jordi Costa and Sergi Sánchez, taken from their book Terry Gilliam: el Soñador Rebelde , and is reprinted here with permission. In your cinematographic work, the figure of the child and the childish glance have a great importance. Did the small Terry Gilliam resemble any of the child characters that would later appear in your work? No, I don't think so. I grew up in the countryside. We lived a few blocks away from the lake, so I was like Huckleberry Finn or Tom Sawyer. I almost always played outside. As a child, the most important thing for me was listening to the radio, because my family didn't have a television. We only had a radio. I think that, somehow, the radio developed my visual sense, because I had to imagine everything. There, there were neither faces nor suits. So you had to create all of that. I believe that it is really excellent training for a visual artist. It does not seem to be, but it is. It makes your imagination work. My father was a carpenter. We both used to build houses in the trees. We used to make igloos in the snow. It was so physical, I was so close to Nature... In fact, I lived in the nature, I lived surrounded by it. And that was how that little game of inventing and creating things with all you had around you came about. The ingredient had always been there.

Extractions: Synopsis On October l0th,1994, in the Chamber Hall of the Warsaw Music Academy, a festive evening, dedicated to Professor Jerzy Pelc, was held on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. During the evening, TABULA GRATUI.ATIOSA, opening this volume, was read. It was signed by a hundred scientists from around the world: from Australia; England; Bohemia; Bulgaria; Canada; China; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Holland; Hungary; Italy; Poland; Russia; Rumania; Switzerland; and the USA. Most of the signatories of this congratulatory letter dedicated their papers to Professor Pelc. Thus, the FESTSCHRIFT came into being. All the papers in English have been included in this volume. The themes of these papers are far-reaching; they cover almost the whole range of semiotics i.e. of a discipline which is the main object of Professor Pelc's previous scientific activity, crowned by his Prolegomena to Semiotics (published, for the first time, in 1982; we quote the second issue of this book from 1984
