Extractions: Various anatomic brain abnormalities have been reported for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), with varying methods, small samples, cross-sectional designs, and without accounting for stimulant drug exposure. The objective of this study was to compare regional brain volumes at initial scan and their change over time in medicated and previously unmedicated male and female patients with ADHD and healthy controls. The researchers concluded that Developmental trajectories for all structures, except caudate, remain roughly parallel for patients and controls during childhood and adolescence, suggesting that genetic and/or early environmental influences on brain development in ADHD are fixed, nonprogressive, and unrelated to stimulant treatment. Extractions: RESEARCH INTERESTS Dr. Hawkes' research activities focus on spatially repeated patterns in developing organisms - from segmentation in the leech, through the patterned expression of homeodomain proteins in Drosophila, to somitic segregation in vertebrates - are a central problem in development. In the nervous system, the mammalian cerebellum is an ideal tissue in which to explore these questions. A variety of molecules - ZEBRINS - are expressed in the adult mouse cerebellum in an elegant array of stripes, interposed by similar stripes of unlabelled cells. This pattern of stripes is, in turn, correlated closely with the pattern of axons bringing information into the cerebellum.

Extractions: The symptoms of Friedreich's ataxia usually become noticeable during the early teenage years, although in occasional individuals the diagnosis has been made as early as age 2 or as late as age 25. The first symptoms are usually difficulty with balance (dysequilibrium), impaired coordination of the legs or arms (ataxia), and thick or slurred speech (dysarthria). As time goes on, individuals with Friedreich's ataxia often notice worsening of their coordination and speech, difficulty knowing where their feet or hands are in space (impaired position sense), and weakness and loss of muscle bulk in the legs and hands. Curvature of the spine (kyphoscoliosis) and high arches in the feet (pes cavus) develop, and may require treatment. Enlargement of the heart, irregular heartbeat, or other symptoms of heart trouble (cardiomyopathy) occur in most individuals with Friedreich's ataxia; the heart trouble may be very mild, but in most cases it can be severe.

The cerebellum helps regulate dynamic musclular activities such as dancing or playing musical instruments or complex movements of the tongue and vocal muscles. Extractions: Cerebellar ataxia is a congenital brain disease found in Jack Russell Terriers. Cerebellar ataxia is a non-specific term referring to lack of balance (ataxia) that can be traced to the part of the brain called the cerebellum. There are many causes of cerebellar ataxia in dogs, including toxins, trauma and infectious agents. Inherited cerebellar ataxia is a specific form of ataxia in Jack Russell Terriers. It is a progressive brain disease caused by premature death of a particular brain cell called the granule cell. Granule cells are found in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that is responsible for balance. This inherited disorder has been recognized in the JRT in the United States for several years. In the form of ataxia studied by researchers at the University of Georgia, the disorder is inherited as an autosomal recessive condition. Studies have shown that both parents must be carriers to produce an affected litter. In affected litters, puppies can show signs as early as two to four weeks of age right after they start walking. Males and females are equally affected. They show head bobbing, a wide-based stance (tripod stance) and knuckling over at the paws. This will progress to stumbling and falling over, and in some cases, inability to stand. UGA researchers have observed that there is some variability in the clinical signs that dogs may show. In the same litter, there may be dogs that are recumbent and unable to rise, while others are able to walk with help.
