Explained Dr Norval: "Around 70% of people are infected with HSV, with the infection usually first occurring in childhood. Once infected, the virus remains in an individual for life, in a latent state in the ganglia (nerve cells). In some people, the virus reactivates and produces recurrent cold sores, which are usually in the same area but are not as serious.
