SYSTEM FOR CERTIFICATION OF COMPULSIVE GAMBLING COUNSELORS (CCGC) STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The certification process for compulsive gambling counselors for the state of Mississippi is designed to certify individuals based on levels of competence and need. The goal of a certification process is to establish minimum standards of competence and in so doing, assure that the public receives the appropriate level of care. The Mississippi Council on Compulsive Gambling recognizes that the compulsive gambler and family members of these individuals need professional intervention during the process of this illness. In so recognizing the plight of the compulsive gambler, the Mississippi Council has established a two tiered certification system to ensure that service providers are adequately trained throughout the state. STATUTORY LIMITATIONS Certification as a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor I ( CCGC I or as a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor II ( CCGC II) shall not be construed as authorization to charge or collect fees for services rendered if to do so conflicts with any statutory limitations. New scientific research released Tuesday at a meeting in Chicago reveals that compulsive gambling may in fact be genetically founded. "Prior to today, we just go in and explain the signs, the symptoms, the progression," said Christopher Anderson of the Illinois Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling. "This just underscores what we've been saying with sound, scientific, tangible evidence. In other words here's a snapshot of this illness." The research suggests compulsive gamblers share a gene that predisposes them to addictive behavior. "Environmental factors are important, psychological factors are important. It's a complex disorder. But genes also play a role and this is one of the genes," said Dr. David Comings of the City of Hope National Medical Center. The gene is called the D-2 receptor. In some people, it can be stimulated by alcohol, drugs, sex, food or lots of gambling.

The Need to Help Problem Gamblers is Obvious Pathological gambling is a present and growing problem in Louisiana. The problem is reaching epidemic proportions according to an article in the journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society, entitled, "Pathological Gambling in Louisiana, An Epidemeological Perspective." A study completed in 1995 showed that, as many as 57,000 Louisiana residents are currently suffering severe problems related to gambling and another 125,000 may be experiencing some level of problems. Most alarming, another study, completed in 1997, showed that gambling behavior is widespread among students with experimentation beginning as early as the fifth grade. EDUCATION AND TRAINING - The Association has been involved with training severall hundred counselors toward receiving cerification for compulsive gambling treatment. The Association has provided problem gambling education to gaming industry employees from all over the state. Still another plan developed by the Association strives to work with the school system to provide education for Louisiana's youth.
