Extractions: Hypoglycaemia Emergency in Hypoglycaemia Hypoglycemia is commonly called "low blood sugar". Even people who do not have diabetes have episodic low blood sugar when they have not eaten enough or exercised vigorously. The difference in common episodic low blood sugar and the severe hypoglycemia of diabetes is the potential for natural processes of the body to respond and recover from it. In diabetes, hypoglycemia occurs in combination with medication that is intended to keep blood glucose down. If low blood sugar occurs in diabetes, it is usually the result of an oversupply of medication relative to the amount of carbohydrate eaten and/or exercise done. Because of this medication, a normal recovery from low blood sugar (increase glucose release from the liver) is not possible. When blood glucose levels drop below 60 mg/dl, most people will experience symptoms of shakiness, irritability, fatique, etc. If a person with diabetes senses these symptoms at this blood sugar level, carbohydrate treatment should be initiated and recovery quick. In some people, however, especially those who have had diabetes for many years, hypoglycemia may not be easily detected. Or it may come on and advance very rapidly. In these situations, blood glucose levels can fall to dangerous levels.

Extractions: August 10, 2001 Orlistat Chosen As Weight-Loss Medication For Look AHEAD Study The multicenter, randomized clinical trial, launched at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, will examine the effects of a lifestyle intervention program in approximately 5,000 volunteers. Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is the largest study on the effects of weight-loss interventions ever funded by the NIH. "We're very excited that Xenical has been selected for an NIH study of weight loss in type 2 diabetics of this scope and magnitude," said Dr. Henry Solomon, Roche. "This underscores our ongoing findings that Xenical can help people living with type 2 diabetes lose weight and improve their blood sugar levels." George Bray, MD, of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, presented results at the meeting from a new study showing that Xenical and a mildly reduced-calorie diet helped patients with type 2 diabetes who take insulin to further control their diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and losing weight, decreasing average doses of insulin, and reducing cardiovascular risks. In March 2001, Roche, the maker of Xenical, submitted a supplemental application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a new indication for Xenical to improve glycemic control when used as an adjunct to other antidiabetic treatments in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes. This announcement followed encouraging results from two previous clinical trials presented at last year's (2000) International Diabetes Federation meeting that indicated that some patients with type 2 diabetes who took Xenical in addition to their diabetes medication not only lost weight, but were able to further control their diabetes by reducing their blood sugar and were also able to reduce the daily dose of their diabetes medications.
