This conclusion is invalid simply because many birth defects and inherited genetic disorders have been found to be improved, or even cured, through diet. The old school of thinking that a birth defect or inherited disorder had to be caused by a single gene is no longer widely held in medical circles. The breakthrough concept in research is that many birth defects and inherited disorders are influenced by both genes and environmental factors, especially nutrition. Genes may make people susceptible to certain defects and disorders, but they are often only a part of the picture.

The doctor said she needed to be "trained" to have a bowel movement and did not want me to give her a suppository or enema even if that meant she would go for a week. I was not going to do that. I hope the Serotonium works. I will know soon.

Elkins M.D., two indivisuals, who, each in his own way, has inspired us to provide compassioinate care for individuals with Down Syndrome Introduction Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) need the usual health care screening procedures recommended for the general population. For example, children with DS need the usual immunizations and well child care procedures as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Immunization practices are continually evolving: be certain to use the most up-to-date protocols. Similarly, adults with DS should have health evaluations using the standard accepted practices. However, children with DS have an increased risk of having certain congenital anomalies. Both children and adults may develop certain medical problems that occur in much higher frequency in individuals with DS. Described below is a checklist of additional tests and evaluations recommended for children and adults with DS. These recommendations should take into consideration available local expertise and referral patterns. They are based on our present level of knowledge and should be modified as new information becomes available. Modern primary health care includes educational and developmental concerns within its domain, and therefore we have included information and recommendations specific to these needs of individuals with DS.

    Extractions: I have been thinking about using sign language while talking to Ian Jack. I was wondering if this would be a problem with him learning to speak later. What are the opinions of those parents that use signing with their children? Does it interfere with speech later? The best way is to start with a child very early and address the oral-motor development, breathing issues, hearing, processing skills and nutrition, so that the child has the fundamentals for speech. ~Kay Ness Ginger answers: I can only tell you our experience. We were persuaded by a speech therapist to start using some signing with Carmen. She will use signs for words she knows and is capable of saying. It is most definitely a crutch, and I have seen her stop saying words once she had a sign. Now, when she pulls this with me, I hold her hands down and she says the words. Think long and hard before you start signing. This advice flies in the face of the advice you will get from any speech therapist!! Shari writes: I did not want my son to learn sign language. I thought he would rely on it instead of learning to talk. Our speech therapist convinced us this would not be the case, however, and we started learning a few signs. It worked wonderfully with Tristan. It enabled his speech. He was much less frustrated. If he couldn't grasp the word he wanted, he could use the sign, and viola, the word would pop out. He's nine now and hasn't used signs in a long time. Every now and then, though, we'll "play" with them.

People with Down syndrome are first and foremost human beings who have recognizable physical characteristics and limited intellectual endowment which are due to the presence of an extra chromosome 21. The estimated incidence of Down syndrome is between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births. Each year approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome disorder. It is believed there are about 250,000 families in the United States who are affected by Down syndrome. How do children with Down syndrome develop? Children with Down syndrome are usually smaller, and their physical and mental developments are slower, than youngsters who do not have Down syndrome. The majority of children with Down syndrome function in the mild to moderate range of mental retardation. However, some children are not mentally retarded at all; they may function in the borderline to low average range; others may be severely mentally retarded. There is a wide variation in mental abilities and developmental progress in children with Down syndrome. Also, their motor development is slow; and instead of walking by 12 to 14 months as other children do, children with Down syndrome usually learn to walk between 15 to 36 months. Language development is also markedly delayed. It is important to note that a caring and enriching home environment, early intervention, and integrated education efforts will have a positive influence on the child’s development.
