Extractions: What is Dysmenorrhea? This condition refers to the pain or discomfort associated with menstruation . Although not a serious medical problem, it is usually meant to describe a woman with menstrual symptoms severe enough to keep her from functioning for a day or two each month. Many teens don't suffer from dysmenorrhea, as their uterus is still growing, and yet they may get it several years after their first period begins. Symptoms may begin one to two days before menses, peak on the first day of flow, and subside during that day or over several days. T he pain is typically described as dull, aching, cramping and often radiates to the lower back. The pain from your period that is severe enough to be given this name by your health care provider is thought to be the result of uterine contractions, caused by prostaglandins (a hormone-like substance, normally found in your body). Prostaglandins are known to stimulate uterine contractions. In addition to pain other symptoms may include, headache, diarrhea, constipation, and urinary frequency and fainting.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents usually begins 2 to 3 years following the onset of menses. It consists of crampy lower abdominal pain that generally begins several hours prior to the onset of a menstrual period, but may begin as much as 1 or 2 days in advance. The pain lasts 1 or more days into the period and then subsides. Pain may be mild to severe, and may be associated with nausea and vomiting and changes in bowel habits (either constipation or diarrhea ). Primary dysmenorrhea is caused by prostaglandin-induced uterine contractions.

Extractions: Back to Top In addition to the previously mentioned in the definitions, symptoms may include: depression , cramps, water retention, skin eruptions, headaches , bloated abdomen, backache, cramps, breast swelling and tenderness, insomnia , fatigue, nervousness, (See also PMS ) joint pain, fainting spells, and changes in personality (such as outbursts of anger, violence, and thoughts of suicide). Menstrual pain in young girls is often severe and relatively long-lasting. Especially at the onset of the menstrual period, the pain usually is experienced as severe. Ideally a gynecologist should be seen at the outset of menstrual periods to determine if everything is normal. If normal, the aches and pains can be eased or cured by a cup of chamomile tea, drunk very warm, or with peppermint tea or even caraway tea. These herbs contain essential oils with antispasmodic effects. Rotate the three teas, if preferred. Prepare the tea: pour 8 oz.

This can be problematic in that patients often confuse this pain with sickle pain episodes and may expect relief with narcotic analgesics. Young patients and those approaching menopause may also have pain episodes that appear to be precipitated by menstruation or the premenstrual syndrome. Secondary dysmenorrhea must be excluded. Clinical Findings Subjective Data Present Illness . Define the pain, relationship to menstrual period, associated breast enlargement and tenderness, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Determine sexual activity, presence of discharge, dyspareunia, or pain on defecation. Past Medical History Determine onset of menstruation, menstrual irregularity, previous pregnancies, exposure to venereal disease, and past venereal infections. Objective Data Physical Examination Vital Signs. Temperature. Abdomen. Abdominal tenderness, CVA tenderness, masses, hepatosplenomegaly.

Information Dysmenorrhea Basic Information Dysmenorrhea is uterine cramping that usually begins with ovulatory menstrual periods. Primary dysmenorrhea, or functional dysmenorrhea, is very common experienced by most women. In fact it has been estimated to be the most common medical problem experienced by women under the age of twenty-five and the major cause of time lost at work or at school for women in this same age group. Secondary dysmenorrhea is acquired by some demonstrable organic pathology and is much rarer. Primary dysmenorrhea is thought to result from a high level of prostaglandin production in some women. (This is a substance that the uterus produces.) It occurs only during ovulatory cycles. In women with secondary dysmenorrhea the cause is thought to be endometriosis, adenomyosis, or occasionally IUD use or outflow tract obstruction. Sometimes the symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea disappear or resolve on their own and can vary in intensity from period to period. Sometimes the pain or discomfort decreases with advancing age and in some women symptoms decrease after childbirth while in others they do not.
