The cases are the first in South Africa of Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus that is often fatal and has no known cure. "There is only one person affected by this disease ... and everyone that has been in contact with her has been contacted," said Parks Mankahlana, a spokesman for Mandela. The nurse was identified as Marilyn Lahana, 46, of the Morningside Clinic in suburban Johannesburg. She became ill about two weeks ago and was diagnosed Friday with Ebola. Health officials are monitoring some 200 people known to have come into contact with Lahana or the doctor, whose name was not disclosed. Family members, co-workers and others considered "close contacts" with the two are being watched for symptoms, which include fever, liver or kidney failure and bleeding, said

But recently this remote area has suffered the encroachments of gold miners, hunters and, most troubling of all, the deadly ebola virus. Jungle fever strikes in Gabon when gold mining and hunting open in a remote area (1.4MB/38 sec. QuickTime movie Two outbreaks of the virus last year killed 70 people here, and health officials responsible for tracking and containing such things returned recently to the village of Mayibout, site of the first outbreak. The epidemic began when children found a dead chimpanzee and took it home to eat. Chimpanzees and gorillas are considered a delicacy here, and the find was welcomed in the village. But the animal had died from ebola fever, and it infected everyone who touched it.

"This is not the Ebola-Zaire strain," Texas Health Commissioner David Smith told a news conference in Alice, the south Texas town where the privately owned Texas Primate Center is located. "We cannot be 100 percent sure that humans can't be infected . . . but we never saw any (evidence) of this," added Pierre Rollin, one of several Ebola experts from the Centers for Disease Control sent to assist Texas health authorities. The two dead monkeys were among 100 that "have been under quarantine since the day they arrived in Alice," said Associate Texas Health Commissioner Dr. Diane Simpson. She said only a few "well-trained" handlers have been in contact with the animals. Extractions: EBOLA OUTBREAK UPDATE ATLANTA - Investigators at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hav confirmed that the Ebola virus is behind outbreak of hemorrhagic fever in Zaire. The outbreak has led to an army-enforced quarantine of Kikwit, a city of 600,000 people and the dispatch of biohazard experts from CDC and the WHO to the area. In a strongly worded message, the U.S. State department has strongly advised all others to stay well clear of the area. The outbreak evidently began about a month ago with the death of a surgery patient at a hospital in Kikwit, 375 miles east of Kinshasa, and has now claimed more than 100 lives. Additional reports suggest the outbreak has spread to a hospital in Masengo, a town 60 miles from Kikwit. The symptoms of Ebola virus include fever, rash and massive hemorrhaging from all body orifices. In previous outbreaks of Ebola virus, 88% of patients have died, most within a period of weeks. Poor hygiene at hospitals has been linked to the spread the virus in both the past and current outbreaks. CDC investigators now en route to Kikwit will be equipped with the now familiar protective'space suits' and respirators, based on the assumption that they will encounter a Biosafety Level 4 agent.

Viral RNA (yellow) is released into the cytoplasm where it directs the production of new viral proteins and genetic material. New viral genomes are rapidly coated in protein to create cores. These viral cores stack up in the cell and migrate to the cell surface. Transmembrane proteins (purple) are produced which are ferried to the cell surface. Cores push their way through the cell membrane becoming enveloped in cell membrane and collecting their transmembrane proteins (spikes) as they do so.
