Extractions: TORONTO, May 13 - A British study shows that as many as a third of epilepsy patients may actually be suffering from a cardiovascular condition known as convulsive syncope. The condition is characterized by a momentary impairment of blood flow to the brain and results in fainting, blackouts, jerky movements, shaking and confusion. "You can have a very convincing epileptic seizure that is in fact syncope," said Adam Fitzpatrick, a cardiologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary in England, who presented his report today in Toronto at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology. In a study of 83 people either diagnosed with or suspected of having epilepsy because of seizures, Fitzpatrick said, 40 didn't have the illness at all. The seizures of 24 of those were caused by syncope and the rest had psychological causes, he said. Epilepsy specialist Gregory Barkley of the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, a spokesman for the Epilepsy Foundation of America, said he doesn't think the study means there are large numbers of people who have been misdiagnosed. "We know that approximately one person in 200 has epilepsy," he said, but many other kinds of seizures may mimic the disease, which is caused by uncontrolled electrical discharges in the brain. He said epilepsy specialists are aware of the danger of confusing the various kinds of seizures. "Just this week," he said, "I had a patient...with recent cardiac problems who had a seizure while shopping" that turned out to have a cardiovascular basis.
