Extractions: ORTHOSTATIC HYPOTENSION Timothy C. Hain, MD. Please read our Return to Index . Content last updated: 12/2002 Orthostasis means upright posture, and hypotension means low blood pressure. Thus, orthostatic hypotension consists of symptoms of dizziness, faintness or lightheadedness which appear only on standing, and which are caused by low blood pressure. Only rarely is spinning vertigo caused by orthostasis. Symptoms that often accompany orthostatic hypotension include chest pain, trouble holding the urine, impotence, and dry skin from loss of sweating. Blood pressure is maintained by a combination of several things. The heart is the central pump, and a weak or irregular heart can cause orthostasis. Conditions such as arrhythmia, heart failure, deconditioning, and pregnancy are examples where the heart may not be up to the task of providing an adequate blood pressure. The heart pumps blood, and if there is too little blood volume (anemia, dehydration, dialysis), the pressure drops. The blood vessels in the body also can squeeze (constrict) to raise blood pressure, and if this action is paralyzed, blood pressure may fall. Numerous medications affect blood vessels including most of the medications used for blood pressure, and many of the medications used in psychiatry and for anginal heart pain. Heat, such as a hot shower or from a fever can also dilate blood vessels and cause orthostasis. The nervous system senses and responds to regulate blood pressure. If something is wrong in this control system, blood pressure may fluctuate.

Summary: We continue our recent review paper about Eye Movements and Neuropsychiatrical Diseases with this short discussion about the intrinsic muscles and the shape, size and reactivity of the pupils. We make a review of the anatomy and physiology of the pupils, the influence of systemic agents producing mydriasis and miosis and the occurrence of pupillary changes in relation with nervous and mental diseases. Finally, we summarize the differences between the rigid and the tonic pupil.

Extractions: Home Iris Map Dictionary Does the Iris Change? Iridology Standards ... Contact Us The Pupil of the Eye Deformations of the pupil are mainly changes that occur disturbing the in side margin of the iris by means of paralysis or irritant of the nerves which control the muscles of the iris. The diagrams below are an exaggeration, even simple flattening may point to nerval problems caused by misalignments of the vertebrae Superior Flattening Superior, or upper, flattening, relates to many patients who experience bouts of depression. Deck refers to central or frontal applanation of the pupil. Schnabel also observed these cut-off areas of the pupils and clearly felt that a cut-off in the left pupil indicated a more negative attitude than if it appeared only in the right pupil. These mental functions are difficult to prove, even though we may understand a little more about manic depression, and how, by genetic coding, some individuals are more prone to this condition than others. Josef Deck goes onto say that those with a left upper flattening are more prone to violent suicide by stabbing, strangling, shooting, or jumping from great heights. While the right upper flattening indicates a self inflicted death by more gentle means, by overdosing, drowning or hanging. However, the irises that have been studied over the last 20 years of suicide victims, failed to show superior flattening of their pupils.
