Extractions: Hydrocephalus is excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within brain cavities (Ventricles). CSF is produced in the ventricles and circulates through the brain and spinal cord before it is reabsorbed from the surface of the brain into the blood stream. When this pathway is blocked due to any reason, backpressure develops in the ventricles and results in hydrocephalus. CSF has many important functions viz. Nourishment, cushion like protection of the nervous tissue and to carry waste products away. Causes Congenital (present at birth) Hydrocephalus is caused by a complex interaction of genetic and environment factors. Aqueductal stenosis (narrowing) is the most frequent cause. Blockage of fourth ventricle outlet (Dandy Walker Syndrome) or Chiari malformations (in association with Spina Bifida) are other common causes. Acquired (development later in life)

Extractions: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a type of hydrocephalus which normally occurs in older adults. NPH is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which causes the ventricles of the brain to enlarge. The enlarged ventricles of an NPH patient may not cause increased intracranial pressure, as is the case with most types of hydrocephalus. The abnormal accumulation of CSF, causing enlarged ventricles, is thought to stretch the nerve tissue of the brain causing a triad of symptoms. NPH normally occurs in adults 60-years and older, and in as many as 10% of all patients with symptoms of dementia. One quarter million Americans with some of the same symptoms as dementia, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's may actually have NPH. more about hydrocephalus Hydrocephalus is an abnormal (excessive) accumulation of fluid in the head. Glossary of Terms DESCRIPTION: The term hydrocephalus comes from two words (hydro = water, cephalus = head). Hydrocephalus is a condition in which too much cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates within the ventricles (fluid-containing spaces) of the brain. The condition may occur at any age. It may be caused by a birth defect, hemorrhage in the brain, infection, a tumor, or head injury. Most forms of hydrocephalus are the result of obstruction of the CSF flow in the brain. In some infants, particularly those born with Spina Bifida, the condition may be the result of other malformations of the brain or spinal cord. Medical intervention is necessary to relieve pressure on the brain from the excess CSF. Without treatment the infant or child may suffer damage from the increased pressure. Extractions: Developmentally, the brain starts out as a tubular structure. As the brain grows, the inner tube remains as a series of interconnected cavities termed ventricles. Cerebral spinal fluid is produced by the choroid plexus within the ventricles starting at sixth week of gestation. By the neonatal period, approximately 300-500 cc of CSF is produced per day. The CSF flows through a series of foramens in the brain and out into the subarachnoid space where it is reabsorbed by the venous system. CSF production continues despite high pressure states. Consequently, if the CSF pathways are obstructed or obliterated by a variety of developmental or acquired abnormalities, CSF accumulates under pressure within the ventricular system. The ventricles begin to dilate with thinning and stretching of the cerebral mantle. This condition is called hydrocephalus. To a certain extent, brain compliance can accommodate the ventricular dilatation without significant neuronal loss. As the process continues, however, irreversible brain damage inevitably occurs. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common congenital anomalies affecting the nervous system, occurring with an incidence of 0.3-2.5/1000 live births. Traditionally, hydrocephalus is detected and treated after birth with a shunting procedure. With the advent of prenatal high quality ultrasonography, ventricular enlargement is now routinely diagnosed in utero. This knowledge has facilitated obstetric care, but presents a source of uncertainty for the family and a challenge for the team counseling parents regarding their fetus.

Extractions: But in January I felt very bad again: headache, vomiting, poor apetite. And my parents had to run to the hospital with me. It was a Sunday evening. The doctor controlled my shunt, and it was so painful! Next day my parents were told, that I have a shunt infection, they have to remove my shunt. The infection was a very serious one, located in my left ventricle, as the doctors told, I was near to die. The surgeon told us, that he must do a lot of painful things (punctio, drain) to save my life. I was there in the hospital for more than four months. Often had headache, vomiting, and my appetite was horrible, I wanted to eat only when my mummy was with me. All the nurses and doctors were very kind and friendly, and were playing with me, when they had free time. And I've learned to hang up my head again, and was near to roll left and right. My parents visited me every day, but I missed my brother very much! In May 2001 i was told, that there is no infection in my head anymore, so I had a shunt surgery again. After 7 days was at home again! But in June - after 2 weeks in my home - I had to go back to the hospital for 2 weeks, because my temperature was very high, about 40 degrees. Thanks God, the cause of it was not my shunt! So I arrived home in time for my brother's birthday party.
