To my very inexperienced eye, his physical condition and outward appearance when we picked him up was what I would describe as "poor." Duffy needed to gain only 5 pounds (but he looked emaciated to this greyhound neophyte), he had a bleeding tail-tip injury, and worst of all (again, to my untrained eye) was his massive hair loss. Both of Duffy's thighs were completely bald nearly to the knee-cap, his entire throat was bald, and his entire belly was also completely bald. I felt I had done my homework on retired track greyhoundsI read Cynthia Branigan's book, "Adopting the Racing Greyhound" from cover-to-cover, had exchanged many e-mail messages with other satisfied owners of ex-racers, and had met two ex-racers in real life. I understood that it was not uncommon for some baldness to be present in ex-track dogs. This is what Branigan described as "crate rub" and the hair loss is the result of the living conditions of the racing greyhound. I had assurances from several sources that, with time (as well as a soft bed), hair loss from crate rub slowly grows back once the greyhound is living in uncrated conditions. On April 15, at 4 o'clock in the morning, another seizure occurred. A crashing sound woke us up and we watched as Duffy's legs turned to rubber as he panted wildly. This one was much shorter, although the pattern was nearly identical to the first one. We began to keep a diary of all the things that had happened in the 24 hours prior to the seizure. We noted that we had cleaned Duffy's ears, brushed his teeth, given him a new chew-bone, had company over, and he had been de-wormed with Strongid T just one week before. We decided to wait it and watch very closely.

Common causes of hypothyroidism include the following: Hypothyroidism can cause several symptoms, ranging from mild (eg, fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, mental slowing, muscle cramping) to severe (eg, heart enlargement, myxedema coma [rare]). Without regard to the cause of hypothyroidism, neuromuscular manifestations can be observed in many patients with hypothyroidism. These metabolic changes occur in many organ systems, including muscle. Pain with muscle exertion is characteristic of defective carbohydrate metabolism.

My new Dr. said the TSH count in my file from my previous Dr. shows 5.23 with 5.5 being high enough to require medication. He feels the 5.23 may be high enough. He's delaying a T4 test (what is that anyway?) because I have a lump in my breast that's being dealth with. I'm almost embarrassed to tell him all these things that feel like they're wrong lately. Could all of this be sypmtoms of a hypothyroid condition: worsening vision (fairly dramatically)
