This forum was inspired in 2002 as a more versatile communication tool for use in conjunction with the "Discussion page on the Kleine-Levin Syndrome Foundation site. Managers Nick and Chuck at Tahoe Language Translators available. For those of us who feel the full effects of this crippling syndrome, there is an urgent need to inform physicians and other victims of its existence. Thanks to the discussions posted in recent years, we the victims now have more knowledge about KLS than the physicians. We hope this site will become another vital tool for sharing our friendships, information, comfort, encouragement, and allow us to fight KLS on a global scale. I know many of us are weak and sleeping most of the time. When we are well, we are playing catch-up on life. Time is precious. Hopefully, we can work toward these goals together: We need to educate each other as to what is happening to our bodies and minds.

Extractions: Kleine-Levin syndrome Kleine-Levin syndrome is characterised by episodes of somnolence and increased appetite, often lasting for days or weeks and with long intervals between them. In this syndrome patients can always be roused from the day-time sleep. However they are often irritable on waking and occasionally aggressive. Some patients are muddled and experience depression, disorientation and hallucinations. The combination of sleep disturbance and appetite disorder have pointed to a possible hypothalamic disorder. However there is no convincing evidence for this aetiology.

Extractions: WHAT IS KLEINE-LEVIN SYNDROME K leine- L evin S yndrome is a rare Sleep Disorder. Or is it? T he main symptoms are episodes of excessive sleeping and a trance-like state. T he onset of the disorder generally happens when a person goes to sleep at night in a normal way - only to wake up in a KLS sleeping episode the next morning. The KLS victim may attempt a normal function but is completely disoriented and stays in a confused state. KLS usually begins in teenage years. T he most notable symptom is the KLS victim sleeping as long as 23 hours a day - rising only to use the bathroom. W hen a KLS victim is awake during an episode the victim remains in a fog-like state and is unable to communicate in a normal way. D uring an episode KLS victims suffer a wide range of mental abnormalities. KLS victims require quiet surroundings - if disturbed they may become agitated or extremely irritable or very uncooperative. KLS is a disorder that comes and goes with a life of its own: meaning that the duration of a sleep episode may last for a few days to weeks and even months. KLS victims do not know when an episode will happen.

Extractions: SLEEP DISORDER DEFINED Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a complex medical disorder that causes random episodes of excessive sleeping for indefinite periods of time. When victims are awake during an episode they remain in a trance-like state, disconnected from the normal world and unable to communicate what is happening to them. No one can predict when an episode will happen or how long it will last or how many episodes will happen in a year's time. There are no tests to diagnose Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS). Very few doctors have ever even seen KLS. The worst myth is that KLS eventually disappears. It does not. Home What It Is What Is Is NOT Goals ... Often this indicates either that the #! line of the script is incorrect, or the script was uploaded in binary mode instead of ascii mode. Check to make sure that the script does not have control-M's at the end of every line. That will prevent it from executing. An easy fix that takes care of this most of the time is to put '#!/.../perl ' instead of '#!/.../perl' on the first line of the script. This is typically a problem if the script was edited or uploaded from a DOS/Windows/Macintosh station to a unix based server.

Extractions: Hyperphagia is defined as excessive ingestion of food beyond that needed for basic energy requirements. Ingestion may occupy unusual amounts of time. Eating may be obligatory and disrupt normal activity. In contrast, bulimia usually occurs surreptitiously in defined episodes and is terminated by abdominal pain, guilt or sleepiness. Hyperphagia Associated with Sleep Disorders Sasson [117] has noted that in patients with sleep apnea who are somnolent during the day, there is obligatory eating to induce alertness, thus reducing daytime drowsiness. This hyperphagia has produced markedly increased body weights in such patients. Binge eating behavior and morning anorexia have been described by Stunkard [118] in the context of a "night eating" syndrome, suggesting a component of sleep disturbance. In the Kleine-Levin Syndrome [101] hyperphagia is associated with hypersomia. Recent evidence evaluating episode hormone secretion dorms sleep in Kleine-Levin Syndrome reveals an abnormality in the hypothalamic regulation of pituitary hormones [119].

Extractions: Imagine going to bed and not waking up for five months! Sounds like the story of Rip Van Winkle, but Kristin Brown's life is no fairy tale. She suffers from a tragic sleep disorder doctors can't predict, explain, or cure. EXTRA puts this puzzling condition in focus. For 23-year-old Kristie Brown, preparing for bed each night is frightening. She knows that once her head hits the pillow she may not wake up for days, weeks, and even months at a time. Kristie suffers from one of the world's rarest and most bizarre sleep disorders. It's called Kleine-Levin Syndrome and its cost Kristin her teenage years, her friends, and a normal life. "I missed my homecoming. I missed cheerleading. I missed all kinds of Dances and social events." Kristie says. It started when Kristie was only 15. That's when she went to bed one night and didn't fully wake up for 10 days straight. "She didn't respond to any of our questions anything that we asked her. She just stayed in bed and stayed extremely quiet." Kristie's mother tells us. "In September of 1993 she went to sleep and she did not wake up until February of 1994." We watched a home video of Kristie during an episode. She drifts in and out of a sleeplike state. Each time Kristie's mother stays by her side offering a little bit of food, a little bit of water, occasional groggy, trance-like trips to the bathroom.
