    Extractions: *For Medical Professionals only, registration required Lymphangioma, retroperitoneal, a developmental malformation and not a true neoplasm, though it presents as a retroperitoneal mass. Lymphangiectasia is the dilatation of abnormal lymphatic channels, which have failed to establish normal communication with the rest of the lymphatic system. The dilated lymphatic channels conglomerate and form a unilocular or multilocular cystic mass, known as a lymphangioma. The diagnosis of retroperitoneal lymphangioma is usually made in infancy. It occurs with equal frequency in males and females. Common clinical findings include pain, abdominal distension, fever, fatigue, weight loss and haematuria. A retroperitoneal lymphangioma can be imaged by ultrasound, CT or MRI. It may be elongated in contour and characteristically spans more than one retroperitoneal compartment. Uncomplicated fluid is seen within the mass or locules, which are separated by thin septa. The fluid appears complicated in the presence of haemorrhage or infection. Rarely, calcification and chyle are present.

The lymphangioma is a benign hamartomatous hyperplasia of lymphatic vessels, with three-fourths of all cases occurring in the head and neck region. While occasional adult-onset cases occur, this tumor is thought to be a developmental malformation of vessels which have poor communication with the normal lymph system. Very large cystic spaces may be seen in lesions proliferating in loose connective tissues and fascial spaces. Diagnosed cases are typically superficial but may extend deeply into underlying connective tissues. Rarely, multiple lesions are seen in infancy and childhood in lymphangiomatosis , the lymphatic counterpart to angiomatosis of blood vessels and a potentially life-threatening disease when visceral involvement occurs.

They are most commonly located in the neck, axillary region and mediastinum (95%). The remaining 5% are found in the abdominal cavity (mesentery, omentum, retroperitoneum, spleen, liver, pancreas). Three histologic types are described: capillary, cavernous and cystic lymphangiomas. Cystic lymphangiomas are usually multilocular, although they may be unilocular. They contain serous or chylous fluid. Differences in cyst content depend on degree of stenosis of the chyle ducts and intrication with the lymphatic system. Clinical symptomatology is linked to the size of the lesion.

What is Lymphangioma (in general) Lymphangioma is a lymphatic malformation and is rare defect in the lymphatic system. It is an inborn tumor of the lymphatic system that, in some rare cases, may be inherited as an autosomal recessive genetic trait. This progressive disorder is characterized by a large sac filled with lymph fluid protruding from the skull at the nape of the neck. The Lymphangioma is thought to be caused by a failure of the lymph system to properly connect with the blood vessels in the neck and thus with the appropriate blood circulation system. My case of Lymphangioma : the full name of my illness is Systemic Lymphangiomatosis.
