It is highly specialized, and it has many functions, including protection from the environment, heat regulation, removal of excess water and salts, production of vitamin D, and the sensation of touch. Skin cancer, like other cancers, is a disease that results from the unrestrained growth and division of cells. The skin is made up of three distinct cell layers: (1) the epidermis, (2) the dermis, and (3) the hypodermis (see Skin Anatomy). Under normal circumstances, skin cells divide in an orderly manner to maintain tissue health. When growth control is lost, a cellular mass, or tumor, forms. Most skin tumors are benign - that is, they are not cancerous and are not likely to turn into cancer. In this category, for example, are most moles, "strawberry spots," and warts. However, if the tumor spreads to surrounding tissues or organs, it is considered malignant, or cancerous.

Cancer is a condition where one type of cell grows without limit in a disorganized fashion, disrupting and replacing normal tissues and their functions, much like weeds overgrowing a garden. Melanoma is a cancer of the pigment producing cells in the skin, known as melanocytes. Normal melanocytes reside in the outer layer of the skin and produce the brown pigment melanin, which is responsible for the color of our skin. Melanoma is when melanocytes become cancerous, grow, and invade other tissues. What causes it? We are not certain how all cases of melanoma develop; however it is clear that excessive sun exposure, especially severe blistering sunburns during childhood, can promote melanoma development. There is also evidence that ultraviolet radiation used in indoor tanning equipment may also cause melanoma. Who gets it?

Extractions: Home Patient Information Melanoma is a serious skin cancer which is curable if detected early. Melanoma grows from pigment cells (melanocytes) in the outer layer of the skin and mucous membranes (epidermis). Although melanoma usually starts as a skin lesion, occasionally it occurs in other parts of the body such as the eye, brain, mouth or vagina. Melanoma tends to spread out within the epidermis (radial or horizontal growth phase) before moving into the deeper layer of the skin (the dermis)(vertical growth phase). It can occur in adults of any age. Melanoma is more common in people aged 50-70. Occasionally it can occur in teenagers but it is almost unheard of in children. Unfortunately, about two hundred New Zealanders die each year of melanoma, but many more are treated successfully. About one in fifteen white skinned New Zealanders are expected to develop melanoma in their lifetime. The risk factors for developing melanoma include: Sun exposure particularly during childhood Serious sunburn, especially when young - however, melanoma sometimes occurs on areas of the body not normally exposed to the sun

Extractions: Web posted at: 11:00 p.m. EDT ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A high proportion of U.S. residents are unaware of the dangers of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, according to a survey released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Dermatology Forty-two percent of those surveyed had no knowledge of the disease, with the level of awareness lowest among people ages 18 to 24 years. The survey also found the level of melanoma awareness to be directly related to levels of education and income. Of those with annual incomes of less than $20,000, 60 percent reported they did not recognize the term melanoma. Only 31 percent of those with annual incomes of $75,000 or more reported no knowledge of the disease. Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. Although the incidence of melanoma is lower than other types of skin cancer, it has the highest death rate. From 1973 through 1992, the death rate for melanoma increased 48 percent in U.S. men. And the CDC says the rate continues to rise despite the ease with which the disease can be treated, if detected early, or completely prevented. The five-year survival rate for early-stage melanoma is 93 percent compared with 15 percent for late-stage melanoma, according to the American Cancer Society. In 1996, there were an estimated one million cases of skin cancer; 5 percent of those melanoma.
