Siblings often share the same family experiences and form a special relationship which can last throughout their lives. Children who grow up together in the same family can form a unique bond, regardless of a brother or sister having a disability. In fact, the relationship between siblings and their brother or sister with a disability can be identical to the relationship between any brother or sister. They may be close and remain so into adulthood, or they may never develop a close relationship or grow apart as they get older. Family situations and circumstances, such as divorce or even cultural differences, can also affect the way a sibling relationship develops. It's important to remember that a lot of factors affect how siblings relate to each other, and not just the fact that one of them has a disability. However, sometimes having a brother or sister with a disability in the family creates challenges that other families may not experience. Some of these challenges can directly affect the siblings.

Extractions: The Division of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MRDD), established in 1974, serves a population that has developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, head injuries, autism, epilepsy, and certain learning disabilities. Such conditions must have occurred before age 22, with the expectation that they will continue. To be eligible for services from the division, persons with these disabilities must be substantially limited in their ability to function independently. The division improves the lives of persons with developmental disabilities through programs and services to enable those persons to live independently and productively. In 1988, the division began participation in the Medicaid home and community-based waiver program, designed to help expand needed services throughout the state. The division operates 17 facilities that provide or purchase specialized services. Eleven regional centers form the framework for the system, backed by six habilitation centers, which provide residential care and habilitation services for more severely disabled persons.

Extractions: Good afternoon. My name is Sue Rubin and I have prepared my talk ahead of time because I dont really talk and my typing is very slow. After my written presentation I would like you to ask me questions. Until the age of thirteen, I was a typical low functioning person with autism. I was so typical, everyone assumed I was also retarded. I was tested by the psychologist and was graded at the level of a two year old. I didnt speak, except for echolalia. I had a very short attention span, was aggressive and self abusive. In October of 1991 I was introduced to facilitated communication, and my mind began to wake up. Progress was slow at first, but after a few months I could type single words with someone pushing my arm back while I typed with one finger. In a few more months, I was typing paragraphs and going to a regular science class. When it was time for high school, my parents, school personnel, and I chose Whittier High where I could be fully included. I graduated after five years with honors and a regular diploma. When I began to type fluently my family realized the importance of it and assumed I would go to college. I too knew I could do it. We planned my high school courses accordingly. Old stereotypes were replaced by total rethinking of autism. Fortunately, the school personnel absolutely agreed. We all became partners in this new adventure.
