The visit also included a full tour of Chestnut Place with presentations made by several of their members. Japan is just beginning its development of supported employment programs and decided to find out what we have learned here in the U.S. about the use of supported employment for people with a psychiatric disability. Extractions: What is genetics? Genetics is "the science that studies the principles and mechanics of heredity, or the means by which traits are passed from parents to offspring" (Glanze, 1996). Through genetics a number of specific disorders have been identified as being genetically caused. One example is fragile X syndrome, a common genetic cause of mental retardation, which is caused by the presence of a single non-working gene (called the FMR-1 gene) on a child's X chromosome. Genetics originated in the mid-19th century when Gregor Mendel discovered over a ten year period of experimenting with pea plants that certain traits are inherited. His discoveries provided the foundation for the science of genetics. Mendel's findings continue to spur the work and hopes of scientists to uncover the mystery behind how our genes work and what they can reveal to us about the possibility of having certain diseases and conditions. The scientific field of genetics can help families affected by genetic disorders to have a better understanding about heredity, what causes various genetic disorders to occur, and what possible prevention strategies can be used to decrease the incidence of genetic disorders. They founded a school, based on their belief that each child had the right to reach the highest possible level of functioning. They borrowed space in a church, and they called their vision The School of the Chimes after the message of hope they heard in the church bells. This was the first school in Maryland for children with moderate mental retardation. And it was the first in a long string of successes for The Chimes. More than half a century later, The Chimes is a multi-service organization with hundreds of highly skilled staff. We serve and support thousands of people with disabilities, who are of all ages and many levels of ability. We have an international reputation for excellence as a leader in developing programs that are effective and management systems that are efficient.
