Despite of only moderate mitral valve stenosis the patient suffered from recurrent pulmonary oedema. Extractions: Myxomatous mitral valve disease is a frequent disorder that is characterized by enlarged, thickened, floppy, gelatinous leaflets, and elongated chordae tendineae. The myxomatous valve as a whole is often moderately to severely regurgitant, which means that blood may leak back through the valve into the left atrium. The optimal treatment to correct this disease is a surgical repair procedure that removes the excess valve tissue and restores a more normal size to the valve. Some doctors, however, have concerns about the durability of the surgical repair since the remaining tissue is still diseased and therefore is possibly unfit to function normally, even after the repair. Normal Mitral Valve Myxomatous Mitral Valve Microscopic examinations of myxomatous tissues have shown that the mitral leaflets and chordae have disorganized, fragmented collagen and elastic fibers, as well as an abnormal accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). GAGs are particular types of carbohydrates that have diverse structural and regulatory roles in connective tissues. In heart valves, for example, it is thought that certain GAGs provide lubrication between the valve layers and allow for recovery from compressive stresses, among other functions. Our biochemical research is focused on the identification of different GAG types, structures, and quantities in normal and myxomatous mitral valves. To accomplish these goals, we have chosen to using innovative fluorophore-assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis (FACE) and immunohistochemical methods. These findings will then be correlated with the mechanical properties of these tissues to determine if the accumulation of specific GAGs is associated with functional tissue changes. We are also growing interstitial cells from myxomatous and normal mitral valve organ cultures, in order to identify any phenotypic differences that would suggest a cell-mediated pathoetiology.

It is located in the left side of the heart, and it separates the left atrium (or upper chamber) from the left ventricle (or lower pumping chamber). Because the mitral valve lies between the left atrium and left ventricle, it is also known as the left atrioventricular valve. Valves open and close, like doors. The closure of the valves in the heart is what produces the characteristic "lub-dub" heart sounds. They help direct the flow of blood through the heart, normally allowing flow in one direction. The mitral valve leaflets open equally when blood is flowing from the left atrium and filling the left ventricle. The mitral valve leaflets then close, with both leaflets firm and shut, when the left ventricle contracts and pumps the blood out to the body. WHAT IS MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE? Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a condition in which there is a slight variation in shape or structure of the mitral valve, causing one or both of the mitral valve leaflets to "billow" or "bulge" backward into the upper left atrium during the contraction of the lower left ventricle. Remember, when the left ventricle contracts and ejects blood into the aorta and to the body, the mitral valve leaflets should remain firm and shut. Instead, the mitral valve leaflets(s) billow backward causing prolapse Sometimes when the mitral valve leaflet prolapses, it may produce a "click". As mentioned earlier, valves help direct the flow of blood in one direction through the heart. Often, when the mitral valve leaflet billows, or prolapses, it allows for a small backward leak of blood. This may produce a soft murmur. The "click-murmur", if present, can sometimes be heard with a stethoscope. Over the years, MVP has also been called the Click-Murmur Syndrome, the Floppy-Valve Syndrome, and Barlow's Syndrome, after the name of its discoverer.

In fact, your heart moves about 100 gallons (379 liters) of blood through your body every hour. Blood is pumped through your heart in only one direction. Heart valves play key roles in this one-way blood flow, opening and closing with each heartbeat. Pressure changes behind and in front of the valves allow them to open their flap-like "doors" (called cusps or leaflets) at just the right time, then close them tightly to prevent a backflow of blood. There are 4 valves in the heart: Blood without oxygen returns from the body and flows into the heart's upper-right chamber (the right atrium). From there, it is forced through the tricuspid valve into the lower-right chamber (the right ventricle). The right ventricle pumps the blood through the pulmonary valve and into the lungs. While in the lungs, the blood picks up oxygen. As the right ventricle is preparing to push blood through the pulmonary valve, the tricuspid valve closes to stop blood from flowing back into the right atrium.

When you have MVP, one or both valve flaps are enlarged. When the heart contracts or pumps, the flaps don't close smoothly or evenly. Instead, part of one or both flaps collapses backward into the left atrium. This sometimes allows a Mitral Valve Prolapse small amount of blood to leak backward through the valve and may cause a heart murmur.
