Chemical sensitivity is generally accepted as a reaction by certain individuals to chemicals but debate rages on whether MCS is classifiable as an illness. One of the difficulties in classifying MCS as an illness has been the complex nature of chemicals in the environment and the interaction effects with and within the human body. The length of exposure, the concentration of the chemical(s), and the individual's threshold of resistance are also factors complicating a simple definition. In the relatively few but growing documented cases of severe reactions to chemicals, there seems to be no single stimuli or predictor of reactions. The most severe cases, often called either Environmental Illness or 20th Century Disease, sometimes result in individuals isolating themselves from society, synthetic products, and any type of chemical product.

Extractions: Skip directly to Resource Index Many people who are physically injured by chemicals (chemical injury) become subsequently hypersensitive to chemcials (chemically sensitive, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), environmentally ill). One toxic event or low level exposures to chemicals over time can cause this. The injury occurs when the overall toxic load has gone past the body's limit of coping. After the injury, a short time later, the individual becomes increasingly more sensitive to an ever increasing number of toxins. The symptoms occur after an exposure to toxins (perhaps walking down the detergent aisle in the grocery store), sometimes manifesting after a time period such as hours or even a day. The greatest offenders are petrochemicals, artificial fragrances, pesticides, gases, chemicals in new carpets, formaldehyde, paints, detergents, etc. Through medical school training and medical journals, many physicians are strongly influenced by the chemical companies who fund the schools and journals. These same chemical companies manufacture both the harmful chemicals and the prescriptions given to mitigate the resulting symptoms. As a result, many chemically injured people don't initially find doctors who can actually help them in their struggle. The purpose of this website is to provide some initial information which might be of assistance to the injured person. It is my personal belief that if the overall toxic load can be immediately lowered, the injured person has a chance to avoid life long chemical sensitivity, or at least to keep it from worsening too rapidly. Extractions: About the Authors In the United States and Canada, advocacy groups are fighting hard for recognition of "multiple chemical sensitivity" ("MCS") as a specific disease. These groups and the patients they represent are demanding that insurance companies cover the cost of expensive and unproven treatment by "clinical ecologists." They are also seeking payment through worker's compensation and Social Security Disability programs and pressing for special workplace and housing conditions. "Clinical ecologists" who number about 400 in the United States and Canada are physicians who practice what they call "environmental medicine." They claim that MCS is a widespread condition caused by exposure to common foods, chemicals and other "stressors" that can sensitize people, causing them to react adversely to even tiny amounts of these substances. Many people who believe they have MCS suffer greatly. In extreme cases, afflicted individuals perceive almost everything around them as allergy-causing and potentially life-threatening. Many of these individuals change their lifestyle drastically and attempt to live in a pristine, controlled environment, virtual prisoners of their perceived sensitivity. Unfortunately, the "MCS" diagnosis and its associated treatments rarely lead to improved health status and may divert patients from appropriate medical treatment. Some individuals spend tens of thousands of dollars in fruitless attempts to attain relief.

Extractions: unsubscribe Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (Environmental Illness) Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is an abnormal state of health where intense and adverse responses occur to components of the patients environment, whether it be water, food, air or physical properties. The signs and symptoms are chronic and relapsing and multi-organ system in nature. The triggers are chemicals, foreign molecules, or energy well tolerated by the general population but causing illness in the individual concerned. The diagnosis can be suspected by a history, physical and laboratory evaluation , but it can be proved only by removal of the individual from the offending environmental factors and re-challenging with the suspected agents under double blind controlled conditions, watching for the same reactions that the patient presented with. Extractions: Synthetic chemicals are all around us. They're in the products we use, in the clothes we wear, in the food we eat, in the air we breathe at work. Because chemicals are everywhere in the environment, it's not possible to escape exposure. No wonder, then, that many people have become sensitized to the chemicals around them. In fact, it is estimated that 15% of the population has become sensitized to common household and commercial products. For some people, the sensitization is not too serious a problem. They may have what appears to be a minor allergy to one or more chemicals. Other people are much more seriously affected. They may feel tired all the time, and suffer from mental confusion, breathing problems, sore muscles, and a weakened immune system. Extractions: Although knowledgable Clinical Ecologists have recognized MCS for at least 30 years, it has only been within the past year (of 2000) or so that the EPA and the government have admitted that it is a real clinical entity and getting worse every month. Only within the past year has the conventional medical paradigm begun to grudgingly admit to the facts. Considering how hard it is for physicians to grow beyond the "Tolstoy Effect" it will likely take another 20 years for most people's docs to recognize it and THEN they will not be trained to have any idea what to do about it. Canada has deployed many of its Forces personnel as peacekeepers around the world, only to have some of them return with a perplexing array of symptoms that defy easy classification. Many different centres have tried to come to grips with these post-deployment complaints as personnel who are unwell ask for explanations. MCS has remained a troubling social and medical phenomenon, and Dr. Scott told participants that they would be hearing from both sides of the debate. He gave special thanks to the speakers who will be sharing their research with the symposium over the next two days. Dr. Scott acknowledged the tremendous amount of work done by Capt. The chemicals that were synthesized after World War II (including, pesticides, synthetic fragrances, cleaning products, detergents, etc.) are mostly petro- chemicals (petroleum based) and are quite toxic to humans. There have been virtually no studies done on the majority of these chemicals to see how they affect humans - the industry just placed the chemicals in the environment with the assumption that they are safe, till proven toxic , instead of the other way around. One of the biggest offenders is PERFUME and other scented products. Did you know that many of the ingredients in your perfume are the exact same ingredients found in GASOLINE!! I didn't either! The scary thing is that the perfume industry is NOT REGULATED at all - they can put any number of chemicals in fragrance without revealing what those chemicals are - or how they affect humans. We humans are all participating in a giant "lab experiment" against our knowledge and against our will, and it's making some of us VERY sick." When you consider the folly of mainstream medicine treating a person who is highly reactive to chemicals with medications that are themselves chemicals, it's easy to see how people get that impression. "Untreatable" and "psychosomatic" are familiar words to people with MCS. Of course TCM has something to offer, as do other forms of natural medicine. My findings, however, have led me to realize that treating MCS requires accuracy and specificity beyond what many practitioners are prepared to deliver. First, Do No Harm Less Is More Treating people with MCS requires the understanding that what works for everyone else may not work for this client. A patient with MCS may be highly sensitive to needles. Treating with fewer points and less invasive techniques is often the most successful method. I do not use Japanese style acupuncture techniques in my practice, but I imagine that the more subtle techniques of some Japanese-style approaches would also be a good choice for a practitioner who is skilled in that area. Extractions: Those who view multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as a real syndrome often describe it as an untreatable condition involving permanent brain damage due to chemical exposure. The defining criteria, as listed on the MCS Referral and Resources Inc. website, includes: a chronic condition, with reproducible symptoms, from low levels of exposure to multiple, unrelated chemicals, the symptoms of which improve or resolve if these chemicals are removed from the sensitive person's environment. In my experience, MCS symptoms can include almost anything. Certainly headaches, neurological dysfunction and digestive problems are common, as are urinary dysfunctions; menstrual complaints; irritability; sensitivity to noise, light and electromagnetic fields; skin disorders; emotional problems; and cognitive disorders. Almost any symptom can be caused by MCS (and usually every system is affected) in traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis. People with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome or attention deficit disorder all have some degree of chemical sensitivity. Sometimes the connection is apparent: a discrete exposure followed by a distinct reaction. However, most sensitivities and allergic reactions are not distinct because many exposures are more or less continuous.
