Most often the parotid glands (in the cheeks) are infected, leading to the classic swollen-cheek appearance; other salivary glands may be infected as well. Besides the gland swelling, people with mumps may also have low-grade fevers, mild headaches, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. The symptoms usually go away within 10 days or so. There are two big potential problems with mumps. Roughly one out of three boys and men who have mumps after puberty develop swelling of one (rarely of both) testes, along with high fever and considerable pain. These symptoms usually go away in 1-2 weeks. Sterility is very rare after a testicluar infection even if both testes are involved. It is also possible to develop a mumps-virus meningitis . This is not nearly as serious a problem as bacterial meningitis, which is fortunate because there is little we can do to treat it. Usually patients with mumps meningitis recover without permanent damage. We give mumps vaccine as part of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Usually a child receives two doses: one at 15 months, and one just before kindergarten or at age 11-12 years depending on state rules.

Many people will tell you a lot about servers and big hospitals, but fact is, M runs on any system and can handle any type of character based data. In case you are unsure whether M is the language for you, look at myself. I am a taxation lawyer and I am using M to drive my own databases and applications, ranging from the address application provided as a sample to accounting and analyzing tools. M is a language for anybody because it is simple. This page tries to promote MWAPI by making samples of MWAPI available. To find out more about M, try these resources Mwapi is a windows environment for M. It is not object oriented, it is simple and straight forward. The windows are built just the same as globals (which is the term for the built in databases which are like arrays) and can be modified at run time just like any global. Additionally, you can use old-style CHUI (Character User Interfaces=terminal windows) side by side with MWAPI windows, allowing you to change existing applications gradually. Additionally, MWAPI provides one great advantage over other window implementations or implementations which do not use MWAPI. As the windows are globals/or databases, it should be easy for any vendor to provide an interpreter which will convert MWAPI applications into PERL scripts, making no difference whether you run an MWAPI application over the WWW or on your own machine, as all the information is already existing in an M readable format, it is even thinkable to create these scripts from an interpreter written in M.

DH Home You are here: Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine (MMR) Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine (MMR) The Department of Health is aware that, as a result of reports in certain newspapers, many parents have become concerned about the safety of MMR vaccine. Many are unclear about the facts concerning the vaccine and want to have accurate, scientific information. These pages aim to provide that information. Background MMR contains three separate vaccines in one injection. MMR vaccine protects children against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). It is given to children at 13 months of age and again before they go to school. The second dose protects anybody who did not respond to the first dose. Since 1988 when MMR was introduced in the UK the number of children catching these diseases has fallen to an all-time low. Children who have MMR vaccine do sometimes experience side effects. These are most usually mild forms of the diseases the vaccine protects against. Very rarely, children can have severe allergic reactions straight after any immunisation (about 1 in 100,000 immunisations for MMR). If the child is treated quickly, he or she will recover fully. People giving immunisations are trained to deal with allergic reactions.

It is the first national survey to actually question children about their attitudes toward getting shots and to measure their understanding of vaccines and the diseases they prevent. "What's clear is that with the success of our immunization programs, vaccines have reduced the fear of these diseases among adults and even name recognition among children," William Atkinson, M.D., a medical epidemiologist with the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), said today at a press conference releasing the survey findings. Parents believe that vaccines have made it safer for their children, the survey shows. Among adults, concerns about measles, mumps and rubella have definitely diminished over time, since the introduction of a vaccine. Concern over measles, which 74% of adults feel are "life-threatening," dropped a full point, from a mean score of 3.2 on a scale of 5, to 2.2, with 5 being the greatest level of concern.

MUMPS is a programming language whose name stands for It is a strictly imperative high level programming language, with a fully integrated database system. It is one of the earliest ANSI standard languages. In general, the syntax was borrowed from FORTRAN , but the data model is closer to LISP . Just as Lisp has a single data type (the list), MUMPS uses the single intrinsic data type of 'string of characters'. Data can be manipulated as integers, dates, floating point numbers, ...; all conversions are done intrinsically without programmer intervention. The primary data structure is usually described as multiple dimensional arrays, but it is actually a structure of multiple rank arrays each of which is a multiple dimensional array, laid upon each other. An alternate description is that the primary data structure is a string subscripted tree, with string values stored, in lexical order, at the leaf nodes and the interior nodes.
