Extractions: March 20th 2002, For information on Arrhythmogenic right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy please click here Dr Chetan Varma and Mohan Virdee, funded by British Heart Foundation Junior Research Fellowships, have joined the department. Dr Varma is studying the role of bi-ventricular pacing in advanced cardiac failure; Dr Virdee is examining the clinical importance of exercise induced left ventricular outflow tract gradients and mitral regurgitation in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr Susanna Barbeyto-Vales, Elida Cobuna, Dr Angel Montielo, Azzorelli Salvatore, Dr Yoshihisa Matsumaru, Lorenzo Monserrat, Thi Mau-Don Phan, Jeanette Bain, Zofia Bilinska, Andreas Ragazzini have joined the Department. Dr Perry Elliott has rejoined the Calman Training Scheme. Dr Alida Caforio (Lecturer) continues with her joint appointment at St George's Hospital and the University of Padua. Ongoing work examines the genetic basis and pathogenesis of the cardiomyopathies. In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy the focus has been on better definition of the genotype-phenotype relationship in relation to clinical, morphological, haemodynamic, histological and prognostic features Our molecular genetics laboraory, directed by Christina Baboonian, has been successful in identifying the sarcomeric contractile protein gene mutation in another 37 probands, now making a total of over 60 genotyped families for evaluation. Work in dilated cardiomyopathy aims to identify markers of disease predisposition and disease progression particularly in the early stages.

Extractions: Myocardial Diseases E chocardiography allows for rapid, non-invasive identification of myocardial disease and differentiation between hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies. Image quality and resolution are important for identifying cardiac wall edges, so that septal and ventricular measurements can be accurately made. This is especially important in cats because of their small size. In general, it is easier to measure wall thickness and chamber dimensions using M-mode images; however, the location and level of the M-mode beam is optimally determined using 2-D echocardiography. cardiomyopathy is characterized by increased septal and left ventricular freewall thickness. In cats, a diastolic thickness of these structures greater than 5 to 5.6 mm indicates hypertrophy. Thickened papillary muscles and reduced left ventricular lumen size are also common. In patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the fractional shortening is normal to increased and the left atrium is often markedly enlarged. With hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, septal thickness may be greater than the freewall thickness (asymmetric septal hypertrophy) and systolic narrowing of the left ventricular outflow region from the bulging, hypertrophied septum and SAM may be seen on 2-D imaging. A thrombus is occasionally visualized within the left atrium or auricle in cats with cardiomyopathy.

Extractions: Simple Non-Invasive Screening of Myocardial Diseases by Detecting High Concentrations of Troponin T, Homocyst(e)ine, Often Significant Disease of these Cardiovascular Risk Factors Found after Acupuncture on Stomach 36 Yoshiaki Omura, M.D., Sc.D., F.A.C.A., F.I.C.A.E Director of Medical Research, Heart Disease Research Foundation; President, International College ABSTRACT About 50 individuals, aged over 40, were screened using the above described method while standing with their legs apart and their arms raised above their head with palms opened towards the laser beam. The laser was directed at each hand and foot separately to determine levels of cardiac Troponin T and Homocyst(e)ine. Ten of the subjects had markedly increased levels of cardiac Troponin T at the left hand, and 4 out of these 10 also showed similar, but less concentrated, levels of cardiac Troponin T at the right hand. In general, cardiac Troponin T level was proportional to the L-Homocyst(e)ine level. In these individuals with increased cardiac Troponin T and L-Homocyst(e)ine, one minute of manual acupuncture, twirling the needle on Stomach 36 (the space between the tibia and fibia near the knee) reduced the concentration significantly, especially when acupuncture was given to both sides of Stomach 36. Therefore, acupuncture given at Stomach 36 can be the simplest and quickest means of reducing cardiovascular risk factor, by reducing both cardiac Troponin T and L-Homocyst(e)ine levels.
