Extractions: Fact Sheet 98-44 Gluten-sensitive enteropathy, also commonly known as celiac disease, celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, or sprue, is a disease of the small intestine. It occurs when the intestinal lining becomes damaged when certain proteins containing gliadin (a protein fraction of gluten) are eaten. The damaged lining is unable to absorb and transport many nutrients, which can lead to malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Symptoms may include gas, bloating, diarrhea, anemia, fatigue and, in children, failure to thrive. Dermatitis herpetiformis is another form of gluten-sensitivity in which the skin is the major organ of involvement. The major symptom of this condition is an extensive skin rash. Although there may be many clinical signs and laboratory tests indicating malabsorption, the only means of diagnosing gluten-sensitive enteropathy is by small intestine biopsy and response to a gluten-free diet. How is gluten-sensitivity treated?

Extractions: DEFINITION Celiac Disease is caused by a permanent, lifelong intolerance to gluten. Gluten is the protein found in grains of wheat, rye and barley. Since uncontaminated oats are not available in the U.S. market yet, oats are avoided also. Removal of gluten from the diet results in improvement of symptoms and usually a full recovery of the small intestinal mucosa. NOMENCLATURE Celiac Disease has a wide range of names including celiac disease, celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, idiopathic steatorrhea, gluten sensitive enteropathy, malabsorption syndrome, gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, intestinal infantilism and Gee-Herter's disease/syndrome. Both the name and the diet can be confusing, but as you educate yourself, youll become clearer about the condition.
Extractions: Celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance, is a genetic disorder that affects between 1 in 150 1 to 1 in 250 2 Americans. Symptoms of celiac disease can range from the classic features, such as diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to latent symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptoms. Celiac disease is a chronic disease in which there is a characteristic though not specific mucosal lesion of the small intestine that impairs nutrient absorption by involved bowel and prompt improvement of nutrient absorption and improvement of the characteristic intestinal mucosal lesion on withdrawal of wheat gliadin (the toxic alcohol-soluble gluten fractions) and the equivalent barley, rye, and oat prolamins from the diet.

Extractions: Celiac Disease Celiac disease is a genetic (inherited) digestive disorder of the small intestine manifested by interference with absorption of nutrients from food. Other names for celiac disease are sprue nontropical sprue , and celiac sprue . Individuals who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is present in wheat, rye, and barley. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system reacts, resulting in damage to the lining of the small intestine. Celiac disease can be diagnosed with blood tests and by examining a small piece of the intestine from a biopsy. If untreated, celiac disease leads to damage of the small intestine and other health problems such as a higher risk of cancer, osteoporosis (fragile, brittle bones), anemia (low red blood cell count), infertility, and seizures. The March 20, 2002, issue of JAMA includes an article about lymphoma (a type of cancer) occurring in individuals with celiac disease. SYMPTOMS OF CELIAC DISEASE Celiac disease symptoms may start in childhood or adulthood, with onset and severity influenced by the amount of gluten that is eaten.
